Why don't I get a spark after replacing the coil on my Redmax grass cutter model TR2301S that is less than 3 years old.?


The gap between the coil and the magnets on the flywheel is critical. It is very close and needs a feeler gauge to be set. OR the magnets in the flywheel are bad.

My 5 hp briggs stopped running. No spark. took recoil off to reveal a rotten coil with wires rotted off. cleaned off the flywheel and replaced the coil with one from Napa. The engine does not have points...


Did you set the Air Gap correctly, it should be .020 inch. If the Air Gap is correct and you cleaned the pickup magnets, you should be getting spark. I have different color coded plastic sheets of the correct thickness to set the Air Gap on different engines. You could use a use a side panel from a plastic soda bottle (Mt Dew, Pepsi, ect) Place it between the Flywheel and the Armature/Ign Coil. Allow the magnets on the Flywheel to pull the Armature/Ign Coil together and then tighten the Armature/Ign Coil bolts. Carefully turn the Engine while pulling the plastic from between the Armature/Ign Coil Pickups. The Armature/Ign Coil is now properly set.

Generall speaking for a gasoline engine to run you need 3 things. (1) Spark, (2) Gas and (3) Air.

My trimmers contacts are always closed so my trimmer wont start, how do i fix this


Use a standard sized business card. Place it between the legs on the ignition module and the flywheel. Loosen the screws on the module. Let the magnets in the flywheel (you can see them) draw the legs in. Your "air-gap" will be set and the setting is about .010". You will now have spark and it may just run!

How to set the ign. modualer on leaf blower


You have to set an "air-gap" on the ignition module between the legs of it and the magnets in the flywheel. Use a standard size business card as your "feeler gauge." Fold it in two. Place it in between the legs of the module and the flywheel. Turn the flywheel until the magnets line up with the coil legs and let the magnets draw the module into it. Tighten the hold down screws. Remove the business card. Your "air-gap" is now set at approximately .010" Closer is better, wider is not.

Homelite U2T608 edger/trimmer will not start. New plug gaped properly. Dropped carb, dissembled and cleaned out all ports. Fuel is flowing and is new. Motor wont even "cough." Suggestions?


Check the magneto for spark. Remove the plug and reinsert the wire and hold it against the engine as you pull the starter. You should get a nice, blue spark. If you don't see one, the magneto to flywheel air gap may need adjusting or the coil module is bad (rare). You basically need good compression, fresh fuel, good clean air intake, and a strong spark to get it to "pop." I realize you may know these things, but, most people are unaware of the .010"-014" air gap required between the magnets on the flywheel and the legs on the coil module. Disassembly is required to get to it and you take the same steps you would if you wanted to fix the pull rope. A standard business card has about the proper clearance needed between the aformementioned parts. Post back if needed. I am here to help.

Igntion coil on echo trimmer went bad, replaced with echo blower coil . there is a small difference in design but now have ignition. Engine still won't start.


Make sure the air-gap between your used blower coil module and the magnets on the Echo's flywheel is about the thickness of a regular business card. That is about .010"-.016". The gap HAS to be present in order for the module to produce the spark.

If you have tested correctly for spark (either spark-tester tool or grounding plug to engine), then the problem is either 1. An incorrect air-gap setting between the coil module and the magnets on the flywheel 2. The coil module itself has become defective....so...take the machine covers off and access the coil/flywheel area and check to make sure there is a gap between them about the thickness of a regular business card (that is .012-.016"). Post back if needed!

Engine wont start it is not getting any spark.any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.


Make sure you have tested for spark correctly with either a spark-tester or by pulling the starter with the plug out and grounded to the engine. If this is indeed the case, then, some disassembly will be required so you can check the coil module to flywheel air gap. If it is too wide, there will be no spark or it will be very weak and if it is too narrow, there could be posssible slight dragging/rubbing betweend the legs on the coil and the magnets on the flywheel. The correct air gap is about .012-.016"
(or the thickness of a normal business card).

If you're sure it's not getting spark, the first thing to check would be the "air-gap" setting between the magnets on the flywheel and the ignition coil module . The correct setting basically only requires the use of a regular business card and is around .010"-.014" If there is an air gap present, check it and then you can move on to diagnose the coil module ( they don't go bad very often) if necessary.
