Screen is dim barely can see desktop in background

I have a acer laptop, while using it the screen went black, vista starts up fine, and I can barely see the desktop in the background, very dim screen. Upon touching the little screen hibenator it gets a little brighter for a second then dim again. Is this a backlight issue? Can I fix it easily? Thanks for the help

Usually this is a problem with the backlight, or inverter. Most of the time the inverter is the problem which is a pretty cheap fix. If its the backlight, then you will have to replace the lcd, which is much more expensive.

Normally this is caused by the power inverter for the lcdscreen is dim barely can see desktop in background - 2.gif. It is a small circuit board right below the lcd, that powers the backlight. If you take off the front bezel of the laptop you should be able to see it, it will have a 2 wire power cord coming out the one end, and another plug in on the other end with several wires.

Check ebay for a replacment but make sure you get an identical model as the one you have, as they are very specific to each laptop. The inverter will have the part number written on it.

You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

My hp Pavillion DV6000 laptop starts up fine and after a few minutes the screen turns black. I can still see the desktop image in the background but barely. If I reboot the screen looks normal again but...

Well are 2 reasons for this behaviour of your notebook...first it can be an issue with the graphics card installed on the motheboard or its an issue with the Monitor cable which is connected between the motherboard and the LCD.

Following are the steps that you can try to resolve the problem:

At first we need to check whether its a hardware problem or not.

1.Restart the computer and tap on the F10 key for a while which would take us to the BIOS SET UP UTILITY...

2.Now we need to wait for sometime in this screen so that we can check the status of the screen whether the screen goes dim or it remains normal..

3.If the screen remains normal for around 10 minutes then its not a problem with the cable,

4.Now we need to get back to the windows screen and try installing the graphics driver for the notebook.

Let me provide you a couple of drivers for the notebook.

I am providing you the drivers assuming Windows Vista installed on the system

if you have an ATI card installed, the install the below mentioned driver:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&swItem=ob-60201-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

if you have an NVIDIA card install the below mentioned driver:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&swItem=vc-77961-1&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

or you can install the drivers directly from the manufacturers website..

Hope this works.

Regards
KEN

How do I get the Acer desktop?

Hi lydaloudon. Depending on which operating system you have, there are a couple of different ways to accomplish this. I will list the steps for both Windows XP and Vista.
WINDOWS XP: Click START, then click CONTROL PANEL. In the control panel double click DISPLAY. In the DISPLAY PROPERTIES window, click the DESKTOP tab. Under this tab you will see a list of backgrounds. Just choose the one you want and modify it if you wish by changing the color or position, then click OK.

VISTA: Click the Start button down in the bottom left corner (little round Windows button), click CONTROL PANEL. Double click APPEARANCE AND PERSONALIZATION and then DESKTOP BACKGROUND. Double click the background you want and click OK.

Hope this helps!

Acer Aspire 5610. LCD very dim all of a sudden.

That sounds just like an inverter problems. There is a slim chance the bulb could be a problem, but I would replace the inverter. It is not too hard to do, no soldering involved.

You have to remove the screw covers on the frame of the LCD frame, and then carefully pop off the frame. The inverter should be on the bottom center of the screen.

Be careful, there is a high voltage in that little baby. Just get the full numbers, and do a search on the internet and buy yourself a new inverter to replace the old one.

Sounds like a registry problem. Are you running XP or Vista? When you go to task manager, click on File /Run. Type the word "explorer" without the quotes...Does the start bar come up?
