HP C6180 IO Unable to scan, copy or fax on USB connection

I'm having the same issue. The AIO worked fine for a couple of years, then developed this issue. I can print fine, but cannot scan or copy (I don't use the fax, but I assume I can't do that either), and it doesn't appear to matter whether I'm wireless, wired or directly connected via USB cable. I've tried the Semi NVM Reset (unplug, wait, replug while holding down # 6) and it didn't correct the problem. I hate to toss out the printer, but it's not much use to me as is, and no one seems to have found a solution to what seems to be a not uncommon issue.

HP C6180
won't make a Document copy...because it won't print in black ...will print in color any time from PC.
rebooted...won't print black in alignment or cleaning modes.
Any ideas?

hi,

The "Scanner Failure" usually refers to the hardware of the printer. try to do a reset.


Performing a semi-full reset of the All-in-One

  1. Use the On button to turn on the product.
  2. Remove the power cord from the product.
  3. Press and hold the # and 6 buttons.
  4. While holding the buttons down, connect the power cord to the product.
  5. Continue to hold the buttons down until the color graphics display becomes blank, then release the buttons.
  6. Use the On button to turn on the product. The reset information appears on the color graphics display.
If the issue still not resolve, please call HP 1-800-474-6836. Also check the warranty status of your printer.

SOURCE: Can I scan through a wireless network connection?

as the name suggests, print server/hub will enable sharing only print commands, not the other functions of the printer. scanning can be done only from the client system.

Check the following steps:


Connect the printer directly to the wall outlet and


1. Verify that the unit is switched on. Unplug the all-in-one from power and disconnect the connection port.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Plug in the power only.
4. Repeat steps 2-4 two more times.
5. On the third time after plugging the unit into power, reconnect the connection port from the all-in-one to your computer.



1. Unplug the power cable from printer when the printer is powered on.

2. Press and hold # and 6 while plugging in the power cord



Try to check the result.

Yes, you are correct in that you have to select the USB port from the driver in order for the printer to print to USB, or install another driver for the USB port.

Solved! I now can scan wirelessly throughout my network. I downloaded the drivers for a friends newer HP all-in-one scanner and I can scan. Look for the driver for the 309a series of printers and install it. Complete the install and set up your existing printer. You can now scan, print, fax wirelessly. It includes updated HP apps for these functions that work with OS 10.5. I didn't upgrade to the HP 1.1 drivers through Apple. The file name is: PS_AIO_05_C309a_Net_Full_Mac_WW_102.dmg

Unable to send or receive fax


Try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for this printer, you can get them from the HP website

Let me know how this goes and whether you need any help doing this or if you have any questions

If this doesn't work then I have a few other ideas for what it wrong.

You could also try a system restore if the drivers don't work

Faxing Hp Photosmart C8160 Solution Center Doesn't Work


This might be one of the communication error issues,
if your printer is connectd to your computer tower using the USB cable make sure that the cable is not too long and also it would be better if you are using the cable that came with the printer

also check if the printer is not connected to a surge protector,it should be onnected directly to a direct power outlet.

check if you do not have multiple icons of the printer in the control panel under printer nad faxes

check if you have the right tab chosen for the printer in the solution center.

try a semi full reset which is # and 3

AS you said that a paid hp support couldn't resolve it

Dell Photo 926 - unable to scan


1. try to make a copy.

if it copy fine, then its an issue with software.

2. Try to scan with MS Paint,

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint
Click on file > from scanners and camera > scan

It should scan if its not the windows issue...

3. Try different computer if it does not scan with Paint\

4. If it works with Paint, try to open Dell AIO center and try to fax from that too...

5. Turn the printer off, take the power brick out from back of the printer where power cable goes in , wait for 15 seconds to connect it back and turn on and try again to print, it should work fine
