Use follow these cleaning steps for your printer:

1. Open the front cover of the printer and remove the drum/toner unit.
2. Gently wipe the scanner window with a soft dry cloth. The scanner
window is located on the roof of the inside of the printer.
3. On the top of the drum unit, locate the blue tab on the left side.
Slide it back and forth across the drum about 30 times.
4. Remove the toner cartridge (TN430 or TN460) from the drum unit
(DR400). To remove the toner from the drum: hold down the blue lever on the right side of the drum (DR400) and lift the toner (TN430 or TN460) off of the drum unit.
5. Inside the drum unit (DR400) there is a green roller. Wipe the green
drum roller with a dry tissue (i.e. Kleenex). You may turn this roller
by moving the gears on the far left side.
6. If the pages area gray pages or have gray vertical lines, install a
brand new toner cartridge. If pages have dots, spots, smudges or
horizontal lines, install a brand new drum unit.
OR
If you are still experiencing gray pages or gray vertical lines,
please install a brand new toner cartridge (TN430 or TN460).

Brother strongly recommends that customers do not use generic drum unitsand/or toner cartridges, or refill their Brother toner cartridge. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality and machine reliability.
The Brotherlimited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the useof unauthorized third party drum units, toner cartridges or toner.

How do you make lines appear on an excel sheet?

I'm not sure what Version you're using, so I'll assume after Excel 2010.
At the top of the page, under the Home tab and directly under the Font window, there is an icon which looks like a window frame (dotted all around except on the bottom edge).
In your spreadsheet you have to select the area you want to work on. You can select a single cell to add lines to or the whole spreadsheet. Click on the icon I described above and a menu box will pop down. There many choices which allow you to select lines on all sides of your work. I prefer the one at the bottom which says 'More Borders'. With that window you select the edges you want lines on, the thickness/type of the line, or put an outline.
I think that's enough for now and I hope that gets you started.

Try cleaning the charge wire. Move the lime green plastic handle from one side of the image unit to the other in the groove. If this doesn't work you'll need a new image unit.$$$$$. note: Make sure green handle is moved completely to the right when finished or black line will occur.

Vertical line and five spots in every sheet of paper I print

Thats on the drum, time for a new cartridge.  The equial distance of the marks on the right side of the page point to the drum  which I presume is built into the toner cartidge.

My printed pages have a single vertical blackish/grey line

Hi johnpenglish,

This is a fairly common problem - it happens when some toner accidentally gets on one of the rollers that feeds the paper through the machine. This problem will often fix itself (i.e., once the loose toner has rubbed off on a few sheets of paper, it will not be on the roller anymore), but if you continue to have the problem, try using a damp cloth or paper towel to wipe off any loose toner on the rollers or the inside of the machine (you might need to remove the toner cartridge in order to reach parts of the feeding path. Be careful not to get the toner on your skin or clothing, since it stains.

Once you've gotten any loose toner off the rollers, you should no longer have a problem with lines in your copies. If the problem recurs frequently, it may be a sign of a defective toner cartridge (which releases more toner than it's supposed to).

I hope this helps - please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Black Line on Rt side of every printed sheet!

Hi,
I don't know if this will help but I was getting smears on the right side of the paper where there was no printing. I came acrossed this and it worked for me. Open up the front cover and lift the top cover and remove the drum cartridge. Then with cartridge out remove the left and right screw on the side of the cartridge. This will give the drum belt room without hitting the cartridge case. The cartridges plastic was not formed well.
