Question about Dryers

1 Answer

My dryer will start and run for about 1 minute then shuts off. It does heat and drum does turn. I wait about 15 minutes or so and then I can restart but the same thing happens again.

Possibly a bad safety switch that senses an overheat condition. Is your vent clogged anywhere? If it is electronic control it could have a problem with the control board.

The overheat sensor may be defective. In addition, the belt may have stretched resulting in uneven rotation of the drum. If you use softener sheets, there may be residue clogging the discharge of the drum.

Open the cabinet and look for lint buildup around the motor. Lint will act like a blanket and hold to heat in on the motor which in turn will cause it to shut down by way of it's safety mechanism. Check that out and post back your findings.

Open the dryer door and slowly rotate the dryer drum in a counterclockwise (CCW) direction. Rotate the drum 2-3 revolutions and then shut the door and see if it will start. If it continues to just hum and not start could indicate a voltage issue, motor issue or a friction issue. Open the door again and locate the door switch plunger in the upper or lower corner on the hinge side of the drum opening. Hold the plunger in while someone begins rotating the drum counterclockwise. While turning the drum counter clockwise and holding the door switch plunger inwards press the start button. If it starts, there is likely a friction problem or motor problem.

Whirlpool LER4634EQO Runs for about 2 minuts and shuts off.

It is possible your Cycling Themostat is not working properly. It determines at what temperature to turn heat on and off to maintain a consistent dryer temp. The High Limit Thermostat would turn off the heat but your dryer would still run. That leaves the Thermal Cut Off which is turning off your dryer. It might be faulty and turning off at too low a temp, or it might be doing it's job. In that case something else is wrong. If you can check the exhaust air temperature at the dryer, it should be under 175 degrees. If you are absolutely sure the vent is clear, then replace the Dryer Cycling Thermostat.

Sounds like the hi-limit temp switch is sensing too high a temperature and is shutting off the dryer. This is a safety feature and is usually tripped because the outlet air flow is restricted, and resets itself after it has cooled down. Check to see whether the rest of the vent in your house is clogged and clean it. It could also be an inlet fan or blower which introduces air into the drum. If this is not working, there will be no air flow into the dryer, causing excessive heat in the non-moving air in the dryer.
