my assumption on wifi was you picked up a signal anywhere, I don't even get on at hotspots. I put my cell phone on there for a number...the thing asks for a number I give it my cell since my cell gets on the net pretty good, thought it used my cell as some kind of antenna or something. Like I said I put the network key in here at home, no prob, but how would I get that info just walkin the streeets, thats not a practical thing to make....

how do I get the wifi to work in hotspots isn't it supposed to sync up automatically

  • vinniebehr Sep 11, 2009

i was able to configure at home because I had the info to put in the fields, can't I just bring up the screen and you walk me through it?

  • vinniebehr Sep 11, 2009

my pocket pc wont work in hotspots

  • vinniebehr Sep 12, 2009

I put in the code to the signal here at home, yes it does work. Isn't hotspots free,

  • vinniebehr Sep 12, 2009

also remember I need a step by step consult, I don't understand these techie terms, I want to know where I find these codes (Isp, Vpn, etc.)

  • vinniebehr Sep 12, 2009

how do I use my wifi to connect in hotspots? I can pick up the signal at home on the wireless after entering the code to the signal, but my hp ipaq hx2490b won't connect anywhere else. I typed in my cell phone and it dials that, is that the right thing to do. It will show networks in the area, but no connection, was in a public place that is a hot spot, it used my number to dial and could not connect. Aren't hotspots "just there" for you to pick up a signal?

  • vinniebehr Sep 12, 2009

again....wifi does not work in hotspots, nothing configures....works on home network...need to know about wifi connection only....used the recent advice, for work setup, now can't get on at home...thanks how do I get a wifi connection...PLEASE

Vinnie, You have to activate your WiFi search permanently. Hence whenever you are in the range of any WiFi hot spot, you will be notified by the phone. You have not mentioned what phone you use. Once you are notified, go there and look for all the icons that do not have a lock made on them. They are the ones you can access by just clicking on them. It will ask you if you want to "go to web address", select it and start your browsing. If the hotspot is password protected they will have a lock made on them. And when you click on them, they will ask for WEP key. Give the number (10 to 12 digit alpha numeric) and access the net. This name will be automatically registered in your mobile and next time when you click on it, you will not be asked any WEP key. I was in NY in Jan and Feb this year and I was carrying my Nokia E61i with WiFi. No roaming I had but I was never out of communication as whichever building I stood under I got a WiFi hotspot without a lock and I was thru. never had any problems.

First check that your wi fi switch on laptop is turn on.
Check that wi fi network adapter driver is installed and enabled in laptop.
Then try to find wi fi networks if you can see your network then connect but if you can't seen your wi fi then connect your wifi router to computer with ethernet cable.
Reset all settings of router to defaults.
Press RESET button for 10 seconds it is in back side of router.
Then you can access it with following link
http://192.168.1.1
or
http://192.168.0.1

for belkin router
http://192.168.15.2
type user name as "admin" and password as "admin" or blank or "password"
then go to wi fi and enable wi fi .
Then security check wep code.

Let me know if you need more assistanse.

Sometimes these devices have an on/off switch somewhere for the wireless, on the side or edge of the case...and it can be a software on/off as well, usually enable/disable on a network icon in the system tray.

Otherwise, right click on My Network Places and choose Properties. Then see if there is a Wireless Network Connection icon. If you only have a Local Area Connection, you need to set up the wireless card. Try Help & Support under the Start menu to get directions tailored to you computer.

Hi,

It seems that you need to establish a Connection for your Work as well. Let me provide you with steps :-

There are two groups of connection settings: My ISP and My Work Network. Choose My ISP if you want to connect to the Internet and My Work Network if you want to connect to a private or corporate network. Option A: Setting up a proxy server If you are connected to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or private network during synchronization, your HP iPAQ Pocket PC will download the proper proxy settings when you synchronize. However, if the proxy settings are not on your personal computer or need to be changed, check with your IT Administrator for the necessary proxy server settings. To set up a proxy server connection, do the following:

  1. Tap the Connections icon, Settings , then Set up my proxy server .
  2. In the My Work Network screen, tap the checkbox next to This network connects to the Internet and This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet .
  3. Enter the name of the proxy server.
  4. Tap the Advanced button and change any necessary settings as instructed by your IT Administrator.
  5. Tap OK twice to save the settings.
Option B: Connecting to a VPN server connection A Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection helps you securely connect to servers (such as a corporate network) via the Internet. To set up a VPN server connection, check with your IT Administrator to find out your user name, password, domain name, TCP/IP settings, and host name or IP address of the VPN server.
  1. Tap the Connections icon, Settings , then Add a new VPN server connection .
  2. Follow the directions in the New Connection wizard.
  3. For additional help on any screen in the wizard, tap the Help icon.
  4. Tap the Finish button to save the settings.
Option C: Connecting to a wireless network Networks you have already configured are known as preferred networks and are listed under Wireless Networks. You can choose whether to connect only to preferred networks or to have your HP iPAQ Pocket PC connect to any available network whether it is preferred or not. To set up a wireless network connection, do the following:
  1. Be sure WLAN is turned on.
  2. Tap Start , Settings , the Connections tab, Connections , the Advanced tab, Network Card , then the Wireless tab.
  3. To change network settings, tap a network under Wireless networks . If you do not see the network you want to change settings for, tap Add new and follow the onscreen instructions.
  4. Under Networks to Access, select All available , Only access points , or Only computer-to-computer , depending on the type of network(s) you connect to.
  5. To connect only to preferred networks, uncheck the Automatically connect to non-preferred networks checkbox.
NOTE: If you select to automatically connect to non-preferred networks, your HP iPAQ Pocket PC will detect any new networks and give you the opportunity to configure them.
  6. Tap OK to save the settings.
Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

You have configure the wireless connection at that place where you want to get connected. Like you have done at home.
Most of the wireless connection are secure and cannot be accessed.

Thanks

Point 6 update the firmware - some routers won't operate on windows 8 until you log into the router and upgrade it.
Also you may want to select an actual channel number rather than set to auto as you can increase channel number by 3 to avoid interference from neighbours.

My Chromebook netbook won't connect to my home wifi

That is weird. Does the Chromebook see the wireless router? I just looked on Google's Chromebook website and it says that the Chromebook works with any security setting. What type of Wifi router do you have at home?
This is the Google page talking about Wifi connection issues.

I lost my network security key for Gigabyte GN-B41G wireless router - I need to add another computer to my home network.

Connect with your existing computer (either wired or wireless)

  • click start
  • click run
  • type CMD
  • type ipconfig and press enter
  • note the default gateway address (should be something like 192.168.1.1 for example)
  • etype exit and press enter

  • open a browser
  • enter the gateway address in the address bar i.e. http://192.168.1.1 as per the above example
  • This will take you to the login screen for the router or the setup screen in the router
  • you may need the login details for the router (if you don't have these then try the factory defaults for your router type, which you can get with a quick google search)
  • You can then find or reset the wifi key on the WiFi section of the configuration pages.

(note if you can't get into the router you can do a factory reset, HOWEVER you need to make sure you have all the broadband user account settings to attempt this)

hope this helps

Please take the time to rate this answer.

Many Thanks Don.

The my ps ask me securyti key for acccess at internet bat i don'no what is .....please you can me help?

The question seems incomplete or not clear but If you are trying to access a secured internet connection at your home or cafe through wifi connectivity, it will ask for the secured password or security key. If it is your home connection ask the person who set the internet connection, if is at a cafe, wifi spot ask the service provider. Hope i understand your question rightly.

In rely to answered question. I don't know which network to sign into. Should qwest be my choice? Thanks, Diane

Does If your trying to use wifi. And if your qwest is broadcasting then yeah use it. Wifi as long as it's not password locked, if ya don't have the password. You can use on that phone anytime.

All that's gonna do is enable the internet for you. So yeah. If you have wifi broadcasting at home. Connect and enjoy :)

I purchased a wifi card for my N610c but don't see where it's installed

Hi

You don't say which operating system you are using.

You don't say which brand, type, format and model of Wifi Card you bought.

If it is an internal card, this cannot be installed without total disassembly of the notebook and, even then, might not fit because the motherboard might not support it or even have a slot for it. This card also requires internal aerial wires. Such a device also needs channels and LCD Panel sockets for the card's aerial wires.

What you should do is go back to where you bought the card from and exchange it for either a PCMCIA or USB Wireles LAN card, which fit simply into the notebook via its PCMCIA or USB ports. After you install the software and restart the PC, your notebook will be able to connect to your wireless router.

I DO NOT HAVE E-MAIL PH402-708-7405 I CANNOT ACTIVATE THE WYFY ICON TO ACCESS WIRELESS INFO I HAVE NO SOUND

Ok, it sounds like you don't have an e-mail address. You can get free e-mail a Yahoo, Hotmail and AOL at least. However if you sign back on here via a Web browser I believe it will display your question and my answer(s).

1) Take your SN to a public Wifi access location that does not have secure access or need a pass-phrase. eg. McDonald's or your local public library.

2) Follow the short startup guide on connecting to Wifi. You can also review the steps to connect via Wifi at the www.digitalgadgets.com website.

3) Assuming it works in a non-secure environment if it still doesn't work at home then the problem is related to your home wifi setup. A very common problem is to not know/remember exactly what the "pass phrase" is. If you don't, you may have to re-set your wifi pass phrase on your router and change all the Wifi users pass phrases.

The Sylvania Netbook sound system is VERY soft. So you might simply not be able to hear it or it could be muted or the volume turned down. You can check this by double left clicking on the "speaker" on the lower right hand side of the screen on the taskbar. Make sure the "mute" box is un-checked and the lever is pushed to the top right under the word "Volume".

If you get a Wifi stick for the Wii but you don`t have wifi at your house can you still go on the internet on your wii

The wii has built in wifi so you dont actually need to buy anything for the console itself. What you would need to buy is a router that has wifi capability to connect the wii. If you want to do a wired setup youd need the USB-ethernet adapter.
But without a wifi router broadcasting a signal you would not be able to connect to the internet in your own home with the wii.
If you need further assistance please feel free to follow up with a comment and i will be here to assist you. If this assisted you please feel free to rate the solution. thanks and have a great day.

Itouch connects to the internet everywhere except home

This is due to your router, not your iPod. I've had to reset the router several times in s row before I could connect to the internet. I'm not sure why the third time worked when the first two didn't. My suggestion is to keep trying repeatedly.
