Question about Porter Cable Cable 0330 Speed - Bloc Finishing Sander

1 Answer

I have a Porter Cable finishing sander ( the kind that takes quarter sheets of sand paper) and it is chattering. I posted earlier and received a helpful answer (thank you) but I mistakingly stated the type of sander I own. What can I do to stop it from chattering? I'm thinking it is something of a mechanical nature.

I was using 150 grit so that must not be it. But thank you.

Try a less course paper (ie # 80, or #100)

DW411 Can I put a velcro pad on this sander so I don't have to fumble around trying to get sand paper on it

Dewalt is not going to make an accessory for you to do so, since that sander was designed to use 1/4 sheet sandpaper, and therefore takes standard paper clamped in place. You could make your own base for the sander out of thin plywood or some other suitable material, covered perhaps with a laminate or rubber surface, that would accept PSA (pressure sensitive adhesive) sandpaper, which you can buy in rolls appropriately sized for your sander. Or you can try some kind of after-market conversion kit such as this one (See also here, etc.)
If you really want a hook and loop base on your sander, I recommend you bite the bullet and simply purchase a random orbital sander with a H&L pad. Then you'll of course have to buy the perforated paper discs to go with it....
But you'll easily be able to change grits, and the performance and quality of your sanding will improve.
You might check the reviews in various woodworking magazines before you make a purchase, just so you know what you're likely to get for your money. There's a vast array of machines made, and the quality varies accordingly, and depends to some extent on your budget and intended use.
Good luck!

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Extreme Vibration in my Porter Cable (Rockwell) 330 Sander

I also have had this problem and I found that if I hold the unit tightly and squeeze the plastic housing the RPM's will stabilize as the unit warms up. Best fix is to replace the rubber isolators that prevent vibrations from the motor from reaching the plastic housing. The isolators have become hard through age or very cold temperatures.
I read somewhere that keeping the sander stored in a warm room can also help because when the rubber is very cold it becomes hard.

How do you replace bearings on a porter cable 505 sander?

First I would go to Dewaltservicenet.com and in the middle of the site towards the bottom type in your model number. I found breakdown on page 8 unless it comes up faster. You will need a bearing puller or something similar because they are pressed on. It is really not that hard with the proper tools. Let me know and if I have answered your question would you please rate this response accordingly and Thank you.

The sander is chatterin g on the oak wood and only barely stops if I apply a whole lot of pressure. I don't want sanding marks so how can I fix it?

You may be applying too much pressure. Also it is my experience with this type sander that one has to use the side of the pad. If you try to use the whole flat pad they chatter. For flat sanding I use a "Jitterbug" type sander. What you have is for coarser work I SUSPECT than what you are trying to do. The quarter sheet type would probably be better for you.

Replacing sand paper

Look on the side of the tool between the guide and drive wheels for a lever

Loosening or disengaging this lever will take the tension off of the belt so that it can be removed

If there is no lever, there will be a tension know on the front of the tool that you can loosen to remove the belt

How do i refill a finishing sander

Without any more detail about your particular finishing sander, I do not know whether this will help, AND I am no expert, but here goes ...

I inherited a Black and Decker 1/3 sheet sander, with no manual, from my late brother. It is not their newest model -- from the yellow plastic and the general looks and wear, I would say it is from the 1980s or 90s. The sand paper is held by a sort of spring clamp at both the front and back. There is a slot -- perhaps half an inch wide and a quarter inch tall -- in both of these spring clamps. I inserted a wide-bladed screwdriver into the slot, and pryed away from the sanding pad to open the clamp and insert the new 1/3 sheet.

Hope this helps!
