Question about Computers & Internet

No cd / DVD drives

I have been using a hard drive and registry clean up tool that has got my pc working much better but my system no longer recognises my CD / DVD drives. I have tried uninstalling and rebooting but with no success? I have also tried downloading the latest driver but when i try to install it says there is a .dll missing?

Thanks for response, i had thought of that but will the restore put back all the errors before i used the clean up tool? My pc was a real pig, explorer wouldn't work properly, it wouldn't shut down or start correctly and was real slow, i don't want to go back to that again. I hoped i might be able to fix it without restore?

I can't see my DVD drive again and I have tried restoring to factory setting. Would physically removing and replacing the drive solve the problem? Please reply asa soon as possible, Thank you.

You can use the System Restore to go back to when it worked, if you did not backup the registry manually, hopefully that will work.

    Try this:

Use the System Restore (or undo what you did with the clean up tool) and MANUALLY go through the cleanup process and skip anything related to your drives, sometimes when you do things the hard way, really goes a longer way when dealing with the registry; remember it's like the nervous center of the brain, if you cut a neuron which you should not mess with, bad things happen, same with the registry. :D

Installed new HD using image from old Hard Drive. Everything works fine, except Windows XP Professional SP3 no longer recognizes the DVD Rom Drive. I tried Windows XP Fixit no luck. Computer does not...

Hi!

This can be easily fixed by delete the lower and upperfilter keys. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
  4. In the right pane, click UpperFilters.

Note You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click UpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  6. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  7. In the right pane, click LowerFilters.

Note If you do not see the LowerFilters registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
  8. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
  9. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
  10. Exit Registry Editor.
  11. Restart the computer.

Toshiba Satellite P105-s6147 CD/dvd drive some how uninstalled

Registry edits not usually a good idea. System restore is your friend. Some DVD burning apps will change your registry and cause the CD/DVD to disappear. Uninstall the new burning app, or system restore to a time you know it was working.
