Re: Install New Belt
Lift the headlight and rotate the thumb dial to release the carpet head. It will spin to the side. Rotate the square handle at the front of the vac fully to the left. Remove the carpet head and open it from the bottom side. Observe which side had a little block below the LED belt indicator when you rotate the brush. The brush must go back in this way. The blocks at the end of the brush are color coded for height adjustment. Remove the brush, slide a genuine belt onto the center and close the bottom cover of the housing. make sure the brush spins freely, now look into the belt opening, round hole at the side. Using the square dial at the front of the head, rotate the hook into the belt to twist the belt and open it for installation onto the motor shaft. Reinstall the head onto the vac, using the thumb dial to lock into place and rotate the square handle again . This will release the belt tension onto the motor shaft. Raise the vac up two knotches with the pedal before lower onto the carpet.

Have you ever replaced the belt? That is most likely the reason that it is not picking up like it used to. You are actually supposed to change the belt yearly. Here is the belt you need and the manual which has instructions:
1. Remove the 4 screws holding the bottom plate.
2. remove roller and old belt
3. install new belt on motor spindle first and then on roller.
4. pull roller, stretching belt, set into roller cavity.
5. turn roller by hand to center belt.
6. reinstall bottom plate.& screws
Take the nozzle of, remove the brush roll, put the a new belt over the brush roll, re-install and put the bottom plate on, making sure that the belt is in the middle of the brush roll. Turn the big knob on the front until it locks, when it grabs the belt it will be hard to turn. Re-install the nozzle on the machine and lock it down. Turn the knob again all of the way, this will release the belt unto the pulley.
http://geeksquad.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=0&thid=728341 Generic problem for all Vacuums I have a Hoover Vacuum Posted by Jimbob48 on Jul 01, 2008 I have a Hoover Vacuum Cleaner, Runabout Supreme, on which the belt has broken. I purchased a new belt, part number 38528-040. I need some instructions on how to install the replacement belt? Thank you.JBS Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Usually there are screws, clips or levers on the bottom of the vacuum and you need to either remove the bottom plate and once you have taken the screws, etc. out the top cover will come off. And then you can proceed with the removal and the install of the new belt. 1st you need to remove @ least one end of the Hoover brushroll and take of the old belt and slide on a new belt. Once the belt is on the pulley side of the brushroll; then re-install the brushroll. Make sure that the brush is spinning freely B4 you install the new belt, then take a belt puller or a screwdriver with a left or right hand hook to use as a belt puller and then stretch the belt onto the motor pulley, then take and roll the belt until it is tracking straight and then re-install the top cover and or the bottom plate, tighten down the screws, levers or clips. So, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://www.hoover.com Telephone Contact our Customer Service Department at 1.330.499.9499 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. EST Thanks, Don the Vac Man Go Ahead. Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Oreck XL 9100C Ultra Bagged Upright Vacuum. The best way to install the belt is to put the belt on the brushroll 1st and then install the brushroll, the brushroll has marking on the top and the bottom of the bearings stating NEW or USED / OLD and install them identical on both sides and then use a belt puller to stretch it onto the motor pulley. The best place to get instructions on how to install the belt and brushroll is the owner’s manual and an owner’s manual is from the Oreck Factory of which I will supply for you listed below or you can download the owner’s manual from the Oreck Website. . I would check with your local Oreck dealer or vacuum dealer in your area to see what is going on. This is most unusual for this to happen. On the front of the power head is a knob with the KIRBY name on it. Rotate this knob in a counter clockwise direction and it will "lift" the belt off the motor spindle. Release the head lever, only one direction it will turn and remove the head. Turn the head over on its back, turn the KIRBY knob to release the old belt. Remove the brush guard by turning the two release fixtures. Remove the guard. Pry the brush out of the head. Remove the old belt. While the brush is out remove any build up of hair and lint off the ends that's where the bearings are. put a few drops of 3 in One oil on the ends. Put the new belt over the brush and re-install the brush into the head. the brush will go in only one way. With your finger pull the belt into the housing and rotate the KIRBY knob until the pawl inside grabs the belt. Re-install the brush guard by engaging the two metal pieces into the front of the head and pull down backwards over the head and rotate the holding clips back horizontal. re-install the powerhead on the machine, lock it in place and rotate the KIRBY knob clockwise. You should be all set!
