Have you run an Anti Virus scan?

Goto Task manager.
From there you can see what processes are running. Norton and Symatec will hog your resources.. End the process that is causing the problem.. careful here.. Some of the Microsoft processes are essential for operation..
After you locate the culprit..
Start>Run> msconfig>startup
Disable the program that is causing the problem and reboot..

Hard drive could be failing, and possible incorrect re-install done. I like to completely wipe out original partition and reformat the drive to make sure no viruses or hard drive errors to interfere with new install. I also know dust accumlation on inside around processor, heatsink and fans can make the fans cycle loud and more often as it struggles to keep things cool.

If you mean the hard drive has logical errors then running chkdsk/f will fix that. If you mean the hard drive had physical errors, replace the hard drive.

Back up your files and buy a replacement drive the grinding noise is the hard drive experiencing mechanical failure and may stop working soon.

It sounds like the bearings are going bad on the motor. Does it make the same sound when it is running?

Upon starting up, HP Laptop dv6000 makes very loud alarm sound. After it begins to start, it makes loud clicking noise.

That is your hard drive, telling you it is going to stop working in the very near future. Suggest you make backups of all your favorites as soon as possible. Use windows backup, it'll back up your pics, docs, email, and favorites for the Internet. An even better idea is if you can make an exact image of your hard drive, then you could copy it to a new hard drive and it would look exactly like yours is today. You would have to buy a third party software like Ghost or Acronis back up..my favorite is Acronis as it is easy to use and makes and exact image of your drive. Let me know if you have any questions.

I would suggest you back up all your data as the hard drive appears to be failing. i presume you are certain it is coming from the hard drive and not a fan ?

Loud clicking

You're going to have to narrow it down by removing components. Start by removing the hard drive, if the clicking stops then you know that it's a component that needs or uses the operating system. If it stops then put the hard drive back and remove other components, CD drive, keyboard, etc... until you can either locate exactly where it's coming from or it stops. The CD drive could be the culprit, and removing the keyboard will expose some of the inner workings so you can hear it better and possibly find what it is. This isn't a simple fix, it will take a little effort, but I believe you will find the problem, this is the exact same way that I would do it if you were to bring the computer to my shop.
