This machine is only 18 months old. My husband thinks it could be the drive motor.

  • marsha_mille Sep 11, 2009

I will try this over the weekend and get back to you on Monday thanks!

I tried running a cycle without any clothes and there wasn't any clunking noise and it seems to happen sporadically when washing normally. More often with heavier loads.

    Thanks, Marsha

Check the coupler between the motor and transmission. Noises during the agition or spin cycle are indications of a bad coupler. This is the inexpensive part. It could also be the transmission.

Trying running the machine while it is empty and listen for the clunking then as well. Does it happen then? Please let me know, it may be something is off balance inside the unit and needs to be re-aligned. However it could be just an uneven load causing it to bump into things as it spins. I assume it does this every time with clothes in there?

Thanks
Tim

No worries, definitely check it out and let me know. Of course make sure you don't use any soap or anything like that in it when you run it empty. It could definitely be the motor as your husband suspects, but the info you provide on Monday will help confirm.

    Thanks
    Tim

Hi,
The bearing under the tub has lost it's grease.Check any signs of grease spatter marks around the perimeter of the machine inside.
If not the problem was with the pump. To check this remove the pump from the motor just to see if the noise was coming from the pump.If It was then pulled the pump off the hoses to get a better look at it, and check for any debris in it.
Hope this helps
Thanks
Smith.

Washer makes clunking noises.......

You didn't give to much detail about the noise, other then clunking. Does it sound like it's metal against metal? Does it sound hollow? When does the noise take place before, during or after the spin cycle.

The easiest thing to do is check to see if the motor is loose, or if you might have too much slop or slake in the belt, if you do then replace and readjust the belt.

Clunking during spin

see if the shocks are not broken. if you spin the wash basket by hand and hear a grinding noise, then your bearing would most likely be bad
