Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

External hard drive use 101!

I bought a ''my book essential 500gb'' external hard drive to store data from my computer as a backup and to store historical data that I may not ever use but am afraid to lose. There was no manual with it to explain how to use it. Can you help me learn the basics so I can store and recall the data when and if needed.

When you plug the drive into your computer it should come up as a new drive letter (drive E: for example). To back up files right click onto the files that you want to backup and left click onto copy then open the drive letter for the my book and right click and left click onto paste. this should copy any files that you would like to back up to the I book to restore simply reverse the process.

First, if there was no installation CD, or even if there was, this would be the simplest route. First, open "My Computer" and note which drives are available. Plug the USB cable from the hard drive to your computer, then plug the power cord into the hard drive and into the wall. If there is a power button on it, press that. Give the computer a minute to run through its recognition process of the hard drive, you should have some kind of popup, saying something like this "Mass storage device found" let those run until they are done. Afterwards, open my computer and see if the new drive has shown up. Either way, go ahead and restart the computer, leaving the hard drive powered up and connected to the computer. When Windows is up and running again, check "My Computer" again. If your drive is listed in there, try a file copy to test it. Choose any file you have, that is not a valuable one that you fear losing. Open the drive from my computer and drag that file into it, and select "Copy Here" . Test the file after it has copied, open it in the appropriate application. If all is well, you are set. Most times, there is no need for a CD, unless you are using the Hard Drive to automatically/manually backup your system. If your just going to transfer/save files on there, Windows will usually automatically dectect and install the drivers. If you dont have a CD and find that you are unable to use the drive, the manufacturer website will often have the software available for download. Here is the download page for your brand. http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?level1=1&lang=en

My computer is broken and unrepairable and I wish to move the external hard drive to another computer. How do I do that? Does the type of computer matter?

The best thing to do is to use the existing hard disk as an external USB hard drive. This will not interfere with or configuring for your new computer.
Install the hard disk into an USB hard drive adapter case and you can access the data on this hard drive as well as storing additional data (ie backup your data).

1. You can use a friend computer and USB hard drive and download the backup data from Norton 360 site.
Depending on the capacity of the driver you can possibly download all you have stored on the site.

The drive was giving you a sign that its about to crash. Try many more time to see if it could still connect and backup the data in it and replace the drive.

External hard drive problem NEED HELP

Is this a new external with no data on it? If it is, it may need to be formatted.Go to disk management to see if the drive is there. It may need to be initialize first before you can formatted. If it has not been initialized, a message will pop up for you to initialized it. Once it is done, formatted--This should be done only if don't have any data on it.

Good luck

WD my book 500Gb probs

Hi wnckevin,

Have you tried goggling for data recovery software. There are a lot of free ones if you had that to your search. But, I've used several paid for ones that worked. I'd try to trail versions to download and first see if can read the drive. If it can't the next thing I would do, is to dismantle the case around the hard drive, and take out the physical hard drive and switch the back pins to Slave, and add it to your computer. (make sure you have your main drive as Master) Then as a slave drive you have a lot more options to recover data.

Good Luck

Can I Repartition WD 500GB My Book Firewire Drive w/DATA ON IT?

Greetings.

You will need to have a third party software to achieve this. I recommend norton partition magic. I have been using it in the same scenario as yours and works. they now support firewire. Easy to use and gets the job done.

Hope that helps.
