Question about Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5940 Notebook

2 Answers

My laptop (toshiba) works fine when attached to the work network server. When I have to travel for work, it is virtually impossible to use it as it freezes all the time, particularly in word. The only way to resolve it is to forcibly shut down the computer. Any ideas what is going on?

nothing to do with main power. I can be plugged into main power somewhere else. Problem seems to be when not attached to server/ internet cable.

Is "being attached to the office network server" synonymous with the tosh running from mains power? I'm trying to establish if this a battery issue or something to do with the software.

OK so it isn't something to do with power.

Looked at logically it's got to be something the tosh is looking for on the work server. k24674's suggestion is along this line, but if that hasn't solved it, could it be some other app is the culprit. If Windows Explorer is open it could be trying to access a network drive or something similar and hogging the processor?

Once you have opened your Word document try closing Explorer (or open the document directly from Word) and see if that helps. If it does then delete all surplus network drives and connections from Explorer when away from the office if you must use it. If it doesn't then before the tosh shuts down check the processor table to see if any other app is hogging it eg virus checker.

Hello,
If Word or the Office suite is fully installed on the computer and not made accessible through the network server there should not be any significant drop in speed (if used with AC power)
If you are on travel and are using the battery then the Toshiba Power Saver enters in action to reduce power consumption, to extend battery life.

If the Office applications reside on the work server and you have to remotely connect, then the speed of execution depends on the connection. If that is the case, I suggest you get a USB key and install on it the portable apps (www.portableApps.com). In the PortableApps suite you have OpenOffice.org (similar to Office). You can use it to type your documents and save them to Word format. When you return to the office, open documents in Word and do some minimal reformatting.

Hope it helps.

Advantages of Server Virtualization

Hardware Virtualization uses software to create a Virtual Machine (VM) that emulates a physical computer. This creates a separate OS environment that is logically isolated from the host server. By providing multiple VMs at once, this approach allows several operating systems to run simultaneously on a single physical machine.

Rather than paying for many under-utilized server machines, each dedicated to a specific workload, server virtualization allows those workloads to be consolidated onto a smaller number of more fully-used machines.

Beginning with Windows Server 2008, server virtualization using Hyper-V technology has been an integral part of the operating system. Windows Server 2008 R2 introduces a new version of Hyper-V. Hyper-V makes it easier than ever to take advantage of the cost savings of virtualization through Windows Server 2008.
Benefits

· Increased availability for virtualized data centers through enhancements such as Live Migration

· Improved management of virtualized data centers through Powershell and System Center integration

· Increased Performance and Hardware Support for Hyper-V Virtual Machines via 64 logical processor support and processor compatibility mode

· Improved Virtual Networking Performance through new networking technologies

· A simplified method for physical and virtual computer deployments by using .vhd files

· Designed to provide a secure computing platform across both physical and virtual environments, enabled through next-generation architecture and security features

Two toshiba laptops, one less than a year old running win7...the other 3 yrs old runnign xp. both worked fine connecting wireless to my router sat. sun the win7 machine said the dns server was not...

Did you press a button (or move a slider-switch) on the WIN7 laptop, to "disable" the wireless adapter?

Can you login to the web-server "inside" the wireless router, and look at the "log-files" that the router keeps of "recent" events (such as connection-attempts from wireless devices), to see if there is any useful information in those logs?

Does the WIN7 laptop connect to _any_ wireless network (Starbucks, university, shopping mall), or does it fail ONLY when connecting to your wireless router?

Have you tried a "factory-reset" on your router, just in case that it might be the problem?

I have window 7 64bit and the keyspan software installed fine but the server utility does not recognize the print server. I allowed port 3842 tcp and udp through the windows firewall but still no luck.

for key span server to work with windows 7 install windows xp mode to windows 7 ( this can be downloaded from microsoft website if you have windows 7 pro and above. if you have windows 7 home then install windows virtual pc, start it up and insert a windows xp pro install disk. for info on this google 'workaround to install windows xp mode in windows 7 home premium and home basic') Once you have windows xp mode running, install the keyspan server utility int he virtual machine and setup as usuall. then share the printer. go to windows 7 devices and printers and add a printer, chose a network printer, select the new virtual machine and select the shared printer. In order for the printer to work just start up the keyspan program from windows 7 and print....your welcome.

If you had to virtualize a Windows NT server on a server running Server 2003, would you go with VMWare or Microsoft's Virtual Server 2005? Just curious what folks' preference is. TIA -

I prefer another box running NT Server, to be honest. But personally I would go with Microsoft Virtual Server. Ive found that one to be more stable in a server environment. My one experience with VMWare on a server was very blue and crashy.

Unable to ftp from outside of the network. Went through all of the port forwarding setup. Still can't connect.

You need to setup a Port Forwarding / Virtual Server (FTP) in the router to forward port 21 (FTP default) to your FTP server's FTP port. You may need to setup a reserved IP address for the FTP server first in the router before the option comes up.
