What fix to apply to HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GWA4164B in Dell Dimension E310 so it can read/play a dvd movie?

Try the following:

1. Go to the Dell.com support site and be sure you have the latest updates for your computer's operating system and the DVD drive, especially the DVD drive's drivers BIOS.

2. Make sure you have the software to play the movie, like Sonic, Windows Media Player, Power DVD, Quicktime, etc. and be sure they are the latest versions.

3. Depending on the movie format, not all DVD drives will play all DVDs. The most common discs are DVD-R and DVD+R and file types like *.avi, *.mpeg, *.mp4, *.mov and then commercial formats. Also try the movie in another machine or DVD player and see what happens.

It can't read or burn any data on any empty disks (CD-Rom/DVD)! but it can read any other written disks like: programs , Movies , audio disks , data disks just when I put a blank or Empty disk it seems...

Some CD burners are either "+" or "-" or both "+ -".

That said you will have to check what type of burner you have. Example, you cannot stick a "+" blank cd into a "-" burner, and visa versa.

However, if your cd burner can read and burn both types, you should be okay.

My DVD drive does not seem to recognize "space" on blank DVDs. I inserted a blank DVD and it kept telling me that it had 0 byte on my DVD when in fact it had 4.7 GB.

Normally a DVD blank or has data stored on it will not show unused disk capacity. If will show the disk capacite of the space it has used.
The read/write DVD disks will show the capacities used and unused after the disk has been formatted and data copied on these DVD disks.
