The black ink will not print on my Epson Stylus

you can try with a brand new cartridge first and if no result, get an ear plug then dump it in (very little) water or alcohol solution (just a small drop or two). clean the area where you find dry ink until all clear.

You need to remove the black cartridge as if you were doing a cartridge change and using a syringe with a fine point gently squirt/apply the ink solvent which you can buy from numerous sources into the port where the ink outlet from the cartidge goes. replace the cartidge and it will charge ink. do the nozzle check and repeat a few times. You should start to get an improvement. Leave for 24hours and try the nozzle check again and you will probably find it is OK. When printing in photo mode it does not seem to use the same nozzles, don't know why but I had the same problem. Make sure you select the correct type of paper every time as it does not revert to a default.

I have an Epson sx600fw which has had a problem printing with black ink. I spent alot of money trying genuine and cheap inks as official advice is to replace with a genuine epson cartridge and clean up to 6 times before seeking further help. Tried this to no avail. By accident I found that if you set the paper type to glossy or photo then miraculously the black will work but in this setting it is slow. Epson replace the printer under warranty but I have just received a new one and it has exactly the same problem. I am slightly reluctant to buy another set of genuine inks to waste through 6 cleaning cycles as they are over £35 so am not sure what to do but I guess I will approach Epson again.

This is a common problem with inkjet printers. The printhead has blocked nozzles and if you cannot unblock it by running the clean nozzle maintence, then you need to buy a new printhead. This will not be cheap.
Inkjet printers should be run every few days to keep the printhead from drying out and blocking.
