It is depend on which type of connection cable your internet service provider.
You don't need modem if in your router ADSL port and your ISP gives you ADSL but if on wi fi router there not dsl port and your ISP gives you dsl cable then you need modem.

Let me know if you need more assistanse.
Thanks.

Yes you definately require a modem before your router can access internet. The modem converts the signals from your ISP making it accesible for your router to provide it to computers on your network.

All in all you definately require a modem for your router.

Hope this helps.

Yes the router gets its signal from a modem.

A router just lets you have more connections to the modem, or a wireless connection.

Do i need a modem? if so which are compatible?

When you speak to Comcast you should see if they are providing you with a wireless modem/router that will be everything you need.

If so, you will not need the Belkin router as Comcast will supply you with the hardware you need. If they only give you a modem, your Belken wireless router should work fine with the Comcast modem.

Hope that helps!

I have a 4100. Can it be used wireless?

This modem that you have don;t have a wireless capability, but if you like to have a wireless network using this modem you need to get a wireless router that will be connected to the modem and the wireless router will be the one that is going to be transmitting the wireless signal for your wireless computers.

You can go and get a wireless broadband router from this manufacturer Linksys, Netgear , Belkin and Dlink , they make a good wireless router that can be use with your modem.

Need to get wireless on my laptop,

No, the SB5100 is just a cable modem, not a wireless router. You will need to keep your sb5100 but you will need to purchase a wireless router if you want wireless on your laptop. If you can also plug your laptop into the sb5100 via an ethernet cable for your internet connection. Linksys and Belkin and others make wireless routers that you can use for your wireless connections.

Wireless password

SURFboard SB4220 Modem is not a wireless modem/router, therefore, it doesn't have a password for wireless connection.

If you're using a wireless router, then that is where the password for the wireless connection is configured. You will need to open the router's setup page to verify the wireless security.

The router is the one connected to the modem. Usually, it has antennas.

To help you further, what is the brand and model number of your router, if you have any.

Modem vs. Router

Oh I thought you wanted a wireless anywhere modem.
Ok
A Modem is what you need to get the internet from your internet provider. A router splits that connection from the modem so that more than 1 computer can get on.
What you need to do is get a wireless router such as the Linksys WRT54G then connect it to the modem so that it will broadcast wireless to your laptop.

Cable internet setup

No, you need to buy a wireless router and connect wireless router to cable modem. Non cable modems do not work on cabled wireless network.
If you buy cable router, buy either a router with no modem integrated or a modem/router for cable network, this last one may be best option, but it needs to be configured. Ask to retailer which models are ok with your broadband provider.
