Check the sync circuit. To be more precise the sync seperator line. or the filter capacitors associated with the sync circuit power supply stage.

Nikii, this must be problem inside. If you are a technical person please check the sync line. I know it is little time taking job in the absence of a circuit diagram. One way is to check a common signal line which connects both Horizontal and Vertical oscillator sections. Likely some resistor must be open, or sync seperator circuit. If you find it hard just reffer to a service personnel who are good at TV.

HOW DO I FIX THE VERTICAL HOLD? PICTURE KEEPS FLIPPING

Before trying anything else try resetting the TV to the factory specs.
To do this simply turn the TV on using the power button on the TV while holding the reset button on the remote. While you are still holding the reset button the TV should turn itself off then back on again.

Our tv worked fine last night and now at first it was really dark and now it is flipping. What do I do?

The loss of brightness is probably caused by degraded high-voltage internal to the set. This can be caused by an electrical "brownout" that will correct itself.
The flipping problem is due to a degraded vertical synchronization signal. First make sure you have a strong signal - no loose antenna/cable connections, etc. Assuming you have a strong signal (i.e., no "snow"), analog TVs sometimes have a so-called "secondary control" (labelled "Vertical Hold", "VH", "Vert", etc.)located on the rear of the set. If you are lucky you may have one and be able to adjust it and regain stability.
Old sets used analog components (which age with time and are somewhat heat-sensitive) to control the vertical sync. Modern TVs use digital signal processing techniques that need no such controls.
Probably need to take the set to a repairman, if you can find one.

Tv stays black

Do you have audio and if so can you change channels to hear other programs? If so ...you have a bad vertical IC. Have a tech turn up the screen control to see a white horizontal line. By your question I would say this will correct the problem.

Cant get back door to stay closed . The lock is stuck in locked position I think and the door is open. When I go to close it, it is'nt staying closed. Had to duck tape it to stay closed. LOL! I keep...

It sounds to me ( correct me if I'm wrong ) like the door latch on the side vertical edge of the door is in the LOCKED POSITION. In order to unlock it perform the following. First electrically with the LOCK button UNLOCK the locks. Now with one hand hold the OUTSIDE DOOR HANDLE IN THE OPEN POSITION, while at the same time FLIPPING OPEN THE LATCH. All Done . Now you can close the door. Hope this helps

Vertical flipping

I bet you put it into PAL mode, the European standard. I believe that you can reset to factory default using the menu and it should be okay. If you cannot read and navigate the menu tree, then I think that if you hold the power button on after you start up, it will reset itself. I have not checked the doc to make sure of the last.
You can also get display problems if you pick the Y/R/G component setting in the menu. It is designed for connecting to a high definition using 3 different cables, one for each color. It only supplies vertical on one of those cables, and the TV just doesn't know what to do without the vertical blank signal from 'somewhere'.
Again, a menu setting.

Picture flipping

The P52940 uses the 195 series chassis. The vert/hgt control is for vertical height. It adjusts the size of the picture from top to bottom. If your picture is flipping, it most likely means that something is wrong in the vertical circuits. I have seen fluid leak out of one of the CRTs and drip down on the vertical output IC, causeing the picture to go crazy vertically. The set should be serviced by a qualified tech experienced in the RCA 195 chassis.
