I'm the one who posted the question, and with dlundmark's suggestions, I gave it a try.

Sorry, no pictures of the process. (That's the whole point.)

For the Coolpix S210, I purchased a replacement screen that came with a screwdriver and tool to use to pry the camera open. (About $25.)

I took out all the screws, noting which ones went where. Then I pried off the back of the camera.

The LCD was in a small, lightweight metal frame, but it was taped closed. I had to carefully work off the tape because the LCD backlight was also part of that frame. If you're doing this, and the frame is taped, go slowly and carefully. My LCD was totally trashed, so I didn't have a problem using a sharp knife to cut the tape between the frame and the LCD, but had to peel it away in other places.

Once the tape was removed, I was able to lift out the LCD and keep the backlight in the frame. (I'm assuming that it was the backlight, because I've read other instructions that talk about them, and there was another narrower cable running from the light metal frame to the camera innards.)

I wasn't sure how the LCD cable (about 1cm wide) hooked into the connector. I tried lifting the cover, but couldn't get it to move. I tried lifting it with the cable itself (again figuring that the LCD was already trashed), and it popped up. I took out the old LCD and cable, and carefully fitted in the new cable into the black clip, and pushed it closed. Then, I fit the light metal frame around the new LCD, and worked it back into place.

I screwed on the outer frame screws, put in the battery, and SUCCESS!

Tips/suggestions: As dlundmark notes, keep track of where everything goes. Go slowly. Don't force anything. Don't get frustrated. Take a few deep breaths, and use a magnifying glass and good light to make sure you can see what you're trying to do.

Best of luck if you need to do this. I've never tinkered with a digital camera before, so this was my first project. As noted above, it worked. Good luck.

    to AMG1167:

I found mine on e-bay. I searched for the make and model of the camera plus LCD (or replacement LCD). Mine also came with a small tool to pry the camera apart (not as bad as it sounds, but after you've removed the screws, you need something thin to slip between the two halves to twist them apart). Hope this helps.

Most cameras are not that hard, if you are careful and willing to make notes of where each screw came from.
Be sure to get the correct screwdriver to fit the screws correctly and use enough pressure directly to loosen each screw...this is quite important, because if you strip the screw's head, it can be messy.
Most LCD screens are directly under the back cover, and can be replaced usually, once the back is off, remove three or four screw which will hold the LCD frame on. Once that is loosened, then you can carefully remove the screen and see if you need to remove anything else before loosening the cable plug. Take care here, because there are a few different ways these cables may be connected. Some are simply pushed into a connector. Some have a socket which has locks which must be loosened to remove the cable. These little sliding plug connectors are delicate, so you must take it slow and not rush the job. Some of these fold up to loosen, some simply slide away a bit to loosen the plug lock.
Most anyone who has done any delicate work on anything electronic will understand what I am talking about here.
A repair manual may be able to be downloaded for free, but you may have to be a member (usually free) in order to download manuals. Some may charge a small fee for the pdf file.
Hope it all works okay.
