1) Accessories---System Tools---Disk Cleanup, this will clean up most of your trashed, unused files and free your disk.
2) Try and move old unused files to some DVD, if you don't have DVD writer move it using pen drive, this way your old unused data will be safe.
This way you will be able to free up at least 40% of your laptop disk space.
