Start the engine and turn the screw in ever so slightly inward. You will know if you are going in the right direction. If you cannot start it, turn the screw slightly in or out until it starts, and then make slight adjustments. Once you get it set right it will run correctly.

What are standard settings for idle and air mixture screws


The idle speed will be dependent on model, particularly if 4- or 2-cycle, 2, 4, 6 cylinders, etc. If your engine uses carburetors, I'd say no less than 600 RPM, maybe up to 850 RPM at idle. If your engine is fuel injected, the computer should set the idle speed and air mixture for you (if it's functioning correctly), and a big twin could idle as high as 1150 RPM .

Your Idle air mixture settings are important for proper idle. A good approach is to let the engine tell you what it likes. For this method you will need either a tachometer or a vacuum gauge. Here are some steps to guide you.

1) If the engine will start and run, go from there. If not, a good initial setting is to turn the idle screw(s) all the way in (GENTLY--don't break the seats!), then back them out about 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 turns.
2) Attach either your tachometer or vacuum gauge to your engine. Tach is connected to the ignition system (usually at the coil); vacuum gauge would be connected to a manifold vacuum port. (The bike's built-in tach MAY work for this, but they are often not graduated finely enough.)
3) If using a tachometer, warm up the engine. Working on only one idle mixture screw at a time, begin turning it IN until RPM begins to decrease. Then back the screw OUT again until you achieve maximum RPM on that screw. Feel free to "play," turning the screw in and out until you achieve highest RPM at at minimum turn-out (if you leave it turned out too far, bike will run rich and foul spark plugs; if not far enough, bike will run lean and hot). Now do the other idle mixture screws the same way. Finally, go back and do all the mixture screws again (and again and again, if necessary) until all throttle bores are synchronized.
4) If using a vacuum gauge, engine temp is not as critical, but go ahead and warm it up anyway. Similarly to the tachometer method, turn the mixture screws in until RPM drops, then out until max vacuum reading at minimum turn-out. If you have multiple mixture screws, do the same on each, then repeat on all screws until you feel they are all synchronized.
5) Throughout the process of adjusting idle air mixture screws, you will probably have to adjust the idle screws to keep the engine in the RPM range you want it to idle. (If adjusting air mixture screws has no effect on the engine idle, the minimum requirement is probably a carburetor rebuild.)
6) Have fun getting to know what your engine "likes!"

Air intake problem or carburater problem?


Check there are no air leaks around where the air intake rubbers are at your carburetor. It sounds like your bike is running too lean or weak which means your air/fuel mixture is running on too much air and not enough fuel. This would explain it running smoothly when you put the choke on as the choke "chokes" the majority of the air from the carburetor and allows more fuel to flow through the carburetor creating a richer mixture. There will be a mixture screw somewhere on the carburetor which will allow you to either richen (more fuel and less air) or weaken (more air and less fuel) by turning the screw either in or out. Only adjust this by a small amount (about a quarter turn at most) at a time and try the bike to see how it rides each time. After adjusting the screw each time let the engine idle for about 30 seconds or so to let it settle to the new mixture setting before riding. There will be another screw on the carburetor which is your "idle" or "tick over"speed adjustment screw which adjusts how high your engine revs while the engine is "ticking over". Turn it in to increase idling speed and out to lower the idling speed. This will probably need adjusting as you change the fuel/air mixture. I hope this helps you and good luck :o)

Check your throttle and choke settings. Something is causing the throttle plate in the carburetor to remain open or the governor is improperly set. I would reset the air/fuel mixture screws to one and a quarter turns out and back the idle screw all the way out. Make sure that the throttle cable operates the throttle properly and check the governor setting and reset the governor setting if needed. Start the engine and adjust from there. When the engine starts, adjust the idle screw until the engine idles. Adjust the fuel/air mixture screws for the best idle. Then run the RPM up and adjust the fuel/air mixture screws for the best run/idle combination. Don't forget to adjust the governor if the engine runs too fast or too slowly.

How to set my idle mixture screws on 2000 r1


Hi, Merlin the carburetor throttle shaft wheel has two cables the cable closest to the right side of the bike is the throttle cable and the one closest to the left side is the idle cable. Right about the middle between the two is the idle adjustment bolt it faces out towards the air filter end of the carb . The engine should be at operating temperature with the enrichener off to set the idle between 950-1050 rpm. Turn the idle adjustment bolt clockwise to increases idle speed and counterclockwise to decrease idle speed. If you have access to your air fuel mixture bolt you may adjust it as well if not there is a video below on how to gain access, make sure you start with clean or new spark plugs. Gently turn the air fuel mixture bolt clockwise until it starts to bottom out "STOP" do not over tighten as it will damage the taper on the end, now back it out 2 full turns to establish a starting point start the engine and check the idle rpm's and adjust the idle adjustment bolt accordingly for 950-1050 rpm if necessary, adjust the air fuel mixture bolt 1/4 turn at a time and let the engine settle for about 10 seconds, clockwise for a leaner mixture and counterclockwise for a richer mixture you are seeking the highest rpm your air fuel mixture bolt can acquire without going past 3 full turns from bottom then readjusting the idle adjustment bolt back down to 950-1050 rpm If you can not detect any rpm change and can not stall the engine by turning the air-fuel mixture bolt all the way in then your pilot/low-speed jet is too big. Final adjustment should be made with a clean air filter mounted to the carburetor. Hi Deeprun5, on the right hand side of the carburator there is an idle adjusting screw with a spring behind it, turn screw clockwise to increase idle counter clockwise to decrease idle. There is also an air/fuel mixture screw inside a carb body lug that may or may not be plugged with an aluminum cap that's about 3/16" thick. This cap can be drilled out to acess the air/fuel mixture screw. Turning screw clockwise will lean out mixture and lower idle, turning screw counter clockwise will richen mixture and raise idle. You need to balance the two adjusting screws to obtain an idle of 950-1000 RPM then back out air/fuel mixture screw 1/4 turn, snap throttle to confirm responce, you may continue to back out air/fuel mixture screw untill desired throttle responce is achieved, if you see black smoke coming out of exhaust you have gone to far and need to turn screw back in 1/8 turn at a time, final adjustment should be made with the engine at normal operating temperature. The mixture screw has its main effect at idle.It is called the idle mixture screw. So may not help fuel consumption a lot.

To adjust it.
turn it in until it stops and count the number of turns exactly(so you can put it back if adjusting doesnt work)
Then screw it back out to the original position, and start the bike.
If you screw it out about half a turn, from the original position, the revs should rise and then become uneven, with the revs rising and falling(this is lean)
If you screw it in half a turn from the original setting, the revs should slow down and maybe stall the engine(rich)
Pick a place in between the two, where the idle is smoothest.

Of course make sure the bike is serviced first, clean or new air filter, new plug, new oil, adjust valve clearances(if it has valves) check tyre pressures, adjust chain (or replace if old)
The new air filter may make the biggest difference, as it gets dirty or old,it will richen the mixture right through the rev range.
And fix the shift key on your keyboard please.

Adjust the curb idle with the engine warmed up and the choke off.

The air/fuel mixture screws should be adjusted with the engine warmed up and at normal idle speed, then turn each air/fuel mixture screw in one at a time until the engine just begins to mis-fire, then back the air/fuel mixture screw out 1-1/2 to 2 turns out a half a turn at a time until the engine idle is the smoothest. (your vehicle might have restrictor caps over the air/fuel mixture screws to limit the amount of adjustment)

I have a 2004 Husqvarna SMR450 always been very difficult to start and now will not start. Have removed carb stripped and cleaned out although no real problem found fitted new spark plug sparking ok got...


you have too much fuel going into to cylinder if backfiring on carb there are 2 screws one for idle and one for mixture the mixture screw is the one you want turn this in 1/2 off turns or more if doesnt help this picture will help buddye738b4f.jpg
