I only have one back up plan. I now have at least 5 copies of all my pictures, and my 2.7 TB backup drive is full. shouldn't it just overwrite the same file?

Go through all the setting on the Backup program, there should be setting to decide to add to the backup or make the Full Backup each time. Also, is it set to back up just your pics or is it doing the whole hard drive? You don't need to back up the Windows System and other Programs that you have Install Disks for.

I did a system image backup onto my Qmemory USB 2.0 external hard drive. I am trying to restore my computer from this system image backup and windows vista business does not recognize it. Windows seems...

If you are using Vista, I seriously doubt it will allow you to use the image. Normally any Windows program will not allow you to do something like that from within windows. The system image backup is meant to restore the image, which means completely copying and overwriting everything on the hard drive - which Windows will not allow while in use. If you boot from the Vista setup disk, then you should be able to restore the disk from there.

Are you using Windows? If you are using Windows, go to Start => Programs => Accessories => System Tools => Backup. In the backup wizard that opens, choose which backup type you want and you can choose your backup destination. Choose your Seagate Expansion external drive for your backup location so that Windows can store an image of your current system into your external drive.

I have a Laptop and an external hard drive. I

Depends on how you want to do the back up.

If you mean instantly writing to the backup external drive, sort of like a RAID configuration, I can't help you.

If you mean a regularly scheduled back, there are options available that should work great for you.

You can use Microsoft's built-in backup to perform backups, or you can use a 3rd party solution.

I've never really liked Microsoft's backup programs, so I use a free program called Cobian Backup,

http://www.educ.umu.se/~cobian/cobianbackup.htm

It is very simple to use. You can set up any schedule you want: daily, weekly, monthly, etc. You can do full backups of everything on your laptop, or only files that have changed or are new since your last back up.

It provides you with the option to use shadow copy, which means it canback up files currently in use (typically those are system files).

It can compress the files to save space and can also encrypt the back ups for security if desired.

I use it on 8 workstations to back up all new and changed files nightly, and to do a full system backup every 30 days and it works flawlessly for me.
