SOURCE: BROTHER Hl 2040 PRINTER WON'T PRING

I got exactly the same problem and the "reset" didn't do anything. I fixed it by putting a piece of duck tape on magic eye on the cartridge.
Fallow those step to do the same thing as me:

  1. Open the front panel.
  2. Remove the toner and the drum
  3. Remove the toner FROM the drum
  4. On each side of the toner, there should be a little glass. Put the piece of duck tape on one of them. I put mine on the right side.
  5. Put everything back in.
  6. Turn on your printer if it's not already.
  7. Now, the low toner light should be gone and the green light should be on.
Now, you can really empty your cartridge.

On the brother printers, the fuser is often attached to the toner (they come out as one piece). If you look at the old toner, you will probably notice that it is longer than the new one. The extra piece that makes is longer needs to be taken off of the old toner and attached to the new one.

My brother HL-2040 Printer is not giving licking sound during startup as well as it also not reading the toner/paper why?

Not sure what you mean by "licking sound during startup"

As for the Toner not reading most often this is caused by the toner cartridge being empty. Try replacing your toner cartridge. If you have recently changed the cartridge it may not have triggered the Toner Reset microswitch. The reset gears on the side of the cartridge will need to be changed back to the ready position. If it is an OEM cartridge then take it back to the place you bought it from and they can replace it and send it back to brother. If it is a remanufactured cartridge then take it back to where you got it from and they can reposition the gears for you.

Not reading the paper can be because there is no paper in the machine or the paper feed system is worn and needs to be replaced.

You must have refilled the first (starter) cartridge or didn't reset the toner reset lever. There is a reset lever on the left side edge of the cartridge. Look at the left end of the cartidge (not the fill cap end) for a round white gear end and a white lever in a hal moon shaped slot. If you can see only the round white gear and the hlf moon is emty of a white lever, it's a non-restting starter. If you have two white spots we will be addressing the one in the half moon slot. The used cartidge will have the lever at the "3 O'clock" position. To reset the cartridge as new you must remove the two screws on that end cap and move the lever to the "11 O'clock" position. Put the scews back in and reinstall in the printer. The sweeper lever will turn in the machine and reset the toner count.

***Important For Brothers**

Make sure when refilling that ALL WASTE TONER is completely cleaned out of the cartridge before adding new toner to it. Brother re-uses its old waste toner and over time the toner hopper gets contaminated with paper dust and too much old toner inside causing them to fail. It you just add toner to the cartridge without thoughly cleaning out, you will soon have a bad cartridge again. You'll see it when dumping out the old as white specks in the toner. That's actually contamination from paper dust and talc from the paper.

Hope that helps you.

My brother hl 2040

Your not resetting the toner reset lever. It's on the left end (not the fill cap side) of the cartridge. If you have a resettable cartridge on the left end you will see to white pieces. One round and one like a lever in a half moon slot. We will be addressing the lever in the half moon slot only. The lever on a used cartridge will be at the 3 O'clock position. Remove the two screws from the end cap and then move the gear to the 11 O'clock position. Put the end cap and screwss back on. Put it back in the printer and close the door. When the printer powers up it will sweep the lever across the sensor and reset the toner level to full.

Hope that helps you.

****Important Note****
When refilling, make sure you dump out and clean ALL OF THE OLD TONER from the cartridge before refilling. Brother reuses it's old toner putting it back into the fresh toner supply (along with debri) and slowly contaminates it's supply with paper dust and talc from the paper.

If you don't clean out the supply hopper well before refilling, it will quickly mix your new toner with the old toner and more quickly contaminate the entire supply. USE GOOD PAPER, NOT CHEAP PAPER and your supplies and refills will last much longer.
