Check that your bobbin thread is not wound too tightly or too loose. Also adjust your tension down a click at a time until it stops breaking, testing on scrap fabric. Singer provided manuals online. Look it up here: http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html

Stiches at the bottom come out like a rats nest not sewing right?

Generally, thread issues that appear under the fabric are the result of an upper thread problem. What you describe sounds like bird nesting or thread nesting and are usually a result of: mis-threading, thread not being fully seated in the tension disk, and/or upper tension too loose.

Remove the upper thread. ALWAYS raise the presser foot. Rethread from the beginning. Verify the thread path is correct. Set the upper tension to the midway point between high & low numbers (although this will probably need to be tweaked for your particular machine). Retest your machine. Adjust the upper tension until both threads meet in the middle of your fabric.

FWIW, mis-threading may not be your mistake. I have an older machine that the take-up lever is open at the top. Sometimes, usually when sewing fast, the thread will literally "jump" out of that take-up lever and...instant thread mess... So, if this sort of thing occurs frequently with your machine, try to narrow where the problem originates. With my machine, I "manufactured" a method of closing the opening in the take-up lever. Voila! No more jumping thread!

Problem with singer 590c. Thread bunches up & breaks or the bobbin thread wont sew. 1 time happened to get everything right & it sewed beautifully.Today I cant get it to pick up the bobbin thread.

Make sure to use a brand new needle.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading.
Unthread and re-thread from the beginning.
Verify the thread path is correct.
Set the upper tension to midway between High & Low numbers.
Verify the bobbin is loaded and threaded correctly in the bobbin case.
Begin sewing slowly and check the result. The upper tension can be tweaked so the upper & bobbin threads meet in the middle of the fabric.

If it is still not working properly, the machine may be out of time and require service.

The thread keeps bursting after a few stitches. I've tried adjusting upper & bottom tensions, changing the needle, trying it with different fabrics, but nothing seems to work. What do I do?

Usually when it stitches an inch or two and then breaks, the upper thread is mis-threaded.

Remove the upper thread and rethread from the beginning. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the upper thread. Check to make sure the thread path is correct. If it is threaded incorrectly, the thread will frequently break.

Also check that the thread is not hanging up somewhere, sometimes it gets looped around something or it snags on the little slit on the thread spool or a rough spot.

If the upper thread tension is too tight, it will also break the thread. Make sure the tension disk is clean. If there is gunk or a piece of thread stuck in the tension disk, it could be interfering.

If the thread is fraying as it goes through the needle eye, then there is probably an incompatibility of the needle, thread, fabric.

When threading machine, thread won't stay in place at step 4, so when I move thread to step 5, thread comes away. Only bought mchine in March.

When threading the upper thread, be sure to always raise the presser foot. This releases the tension disk and allows the thread to seat properly.

Why does bobbin cotton keep bunching?

Is it the upper thread bunching under the fabric? If so, it is usually incorrect upper threading, the thread is not seated in the tension disk, or the upper tension is too loose. Also, a damaged needle can cause issues.

Install a brand new needle that is compatible with the thread and fabric. Frequent changing of needles is an inexpensive fix for a frequent sewing issues.
All About Needles

Remove all the upper thread.
RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Make sure the thread path is correct (consult the manual).
Set the upper tension at the midway point between high & low numbers.

Retest. If the upper thread and bobbin thread are not meeting in the middle of the fabric stitched, then loosen or tighten the upper tension until it does.

NOTE: Always thread the upper thread with the presser foot in the raised position. This opens the disk and allows the thread to seat properly. Also to remove upper thread, it is best to clip the thread near the spool, raise the presser foot, and graspl the clipped thread tail near the needle and pull DOWN through the machine (Never pull thread up through the tension disk).

Noted that you cleaned the bobbin area, but also be sure to clean the feed dogs. Frequently, lint & dust accumulates in and around the teeth which can inhibit their ability to grasp the fabric firmly. Frequent cleaning in this area is important for your machine's maintenance.

Review the cleaning and oiling instructions in your manual. Oiling is important and should be performed frequently with 1-2 drops each spot as specified. Oiling the hook is usually good to do every 8 hours of sewing time. Use ONLY fresh good quality sewing machine oil for your machine--NOT 3-in-1, WD-40, cooking oil, or the old metal can in grandma's sewing basket.

So when I start sewing it works for a few seconds then my top thread breaks and or wraps its self around the black casing the bobbin sits in. What am I doing wrong?

Be sure to RAISE the presser foot BEFORE threading the upper thread. This releases the tension disk so the thread can seat properly. If upper thread is breaking soon after beginning to sew, it usually is because the upper tension is too tight. Try loosening it and re-testing. The upper and lower threads should meet in the middle of the fabric.

The top needle unthreads after just a few stiches. I have a Singer 2950 and am new to sewing.

Are you saying that the thread is breaking?

CAUSES of upper thread breaking

needle is in backwards
improperly threaded
tension to tight
needle bent or blunt
thread to coarse for size of needle
needle too long for machine
burr on needle
tension discs worn so that thread works in grove
neele too fine for size of thread and fabric
lint or dirt around bobbin case holder
irregular sewing speed
AND THE BIGGEST PROBLEM IS:
threads not properly pulled back under pressure foot when starting to sew
This means, Have enough of the upper and lower thread pulled to the back and hold for the first 2-3 stiches,

Do this every time and it will become second nature and you will do it automatically
