Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

I installed the Canon MX850 on three macs all running snow leopard. I'm using the cups driver that was just updated by Canon in the last few days. Everything prints fine, but the Duplex Printing and Margin option is crossed out when I try to print a Mail message or a PDF file. All other formats work just fine. What can I do. Jerry

It does sound like a driver issue. Your symptom can occur when the wrong driver is being used, such as selecting one of the Canon Gutenprint drivers but for a different printer model, or using the so-called CUPS driver provided by Canon.

To determine which driver you selected, open System Preferences > Print & Fax and select the MX850 in the Printers list. The right hand pane shows details about the printer, such as Location, Kind and Status. The Kind row should have something like 'Canon MX850 series'

Canon offers two drivers for this model, the v7.1.1 Mac OS X driver and the v10.2.2 CUPS driver. If you have the printer connected to one Mac or Airport device via USB, then all Mac's should use the v7 driver.

If the printer is connected to a 3rd party print server or a Windows computer, then you will not be able to use either Canon driver and will have to look at a true CUPS driver, such as those offered by Gutenprint or PrintFab. While Gutenprint would be the preferred choice, because it is free, you may find the MX850 is not a supported printer with the latest release. So, you may have to resort to purchasing the drivers offered by PrintFab.

If you are using the Ethernet connection instead of the USB, then there is a different method of connecting to the printer via the Mac's. Can you reply with how you are connecting to the AIO.

Canon PIXMA MX870 Wireless Printer works with Snow Leopard OS?

The MX870 is compatible with Mac OS X, all versions. I think the CD that comes with the unit will have the Mac Snow Leopard drivers on it, but if not you will be able to download them here.

How can I scan to the Mac

It will depend on a few things:

The type of printer/scanner you have (HP, Canon, Lexmark, etc) and the operating system installed on the Mac.

You can find the operating system number by clicking on the Apple Menu (top left corner of the screen) and pressing "About This Mac". In the center of this window it will say "version 10.5.8 or 10.6.2 or 10.something)".

If it's 10.5.8 - that means you are running Leopard, and you may have to download updated printer drivers from the maker of your printer.

If it's 10.6 - update to 10.6.2 (apple menu > software update).

If it's 10.6.2 - restart the computer and disconnect the scanner. Restart it and connect it. Snow Leopard should discover the correct drivers automatically.

After that, all scanning is done in the Image Capture.app (located within Applications > Utilities.

Happy scanning!

I work with Mac OS (Snow Leopard) and my Mac don't recognize the Agfa Snapscan e25. What should I do? Regards

Snow Leopard has a bunch of drivers built in to control various printers.  If it doesn't recognize the printer, then you will have to go on Agfa's web site to see if they have a printer driver compatible with Snow Leopard.  Keep in mind that Snow Leopard is a new OS and that printer manufacturers will take some time to update their programs and drivers to run on it.  If you don't find a driver then, you got to use a different printer or downgrade your OS to one that will run the printer.
