Signal strength bad between PS3 & D-LINK DIR-655 Wireless Router

I have used the Linksys WRT54GS to hook wirelessly to my PS3 and I got about 25-40% signal strength. I recently bought a new D-Link DIR-655 and I now get anywhere from 10-30% signal strength. Is there something wrong with my d-link router? I have this setup: WPA2-PSK, fixed channel 11, mixed mode g/n/b, 20MHz channel width. Why is it so fast and have so much range (it seems like) for all my computers and phones, but not the playstation? Please help!

Thanks for some of the solutions. I've tried them but it has not done much good. I want it wirelessly, not wired. I put a blackberry phone at the same place as my ps3, it it gets 2-3 times more signal strength. Also, the ps3 consistently gets a rate of 1 Mbps, while all other devices gets 24 (blackberry)-130 (macbook) Mbps wirelessly. Is that common? The router and ps3 is only 1 wall apart, and i even tried reserving a dhcp address for it. Still getting about 15% signal strength.

I posted this problem because other people have been getting 70-90, even 100% signal strength with the DIR-655 to their PS3, and from farther away than how I'm placing them. Do you think that is a problem with the router, or my ps3?

Things to try:

1. Swapping the router from mixed mode to G only.

2. Raise up the wireless router higher in the room.

3. Move the router closer to the ps3 or the ps3 closer to it.

4. Run ethernet cable to the ps3 from the router. (clunky but 1ms ping times to the router does make seem worth it.)

5. Put the ole warhorse of a linksys back in and hope for store credit on the dlink. As it seems to have been working for you.

To answer your question:

Currently most things have built in G class wireless antennas. As such they prefer G and the N router eats into the G's spectrum. Not bad but some bleeding of channels is just going to happen and as such N class things will love the N router but the G class have to suffer a bit.

Most likely it is the antenna for the router. Try changing the position or location of the router. The slightest twist or tilt of the router will affect the reception. A little bit of messing with it may improve your signal. Obviously the closer you can get it to your ps3 the better.

Considering what you say in your comments... it sounds like the issue is with the ps3 more than the router. If the ps3 and router are just a wall apart I would consider putting a hole in the wall and using an ethernet cable. The connection speed and absence of lag are so worth it. Wireless in convienent but can't come close to wired connection. Especally for gaming. I have both types of connection for my XBox360. I have decided to roll out the cord to play and roll it up when not. It's a bit of a hassle but wife puts up with it and I don't get beat to the shot on COD4 by other players because I am wireless.

Usually this is caused because the security settings on the laptop or PC do not match what is setup on the wireless router. Login to the wireless router and look at what is setup for security, WPA, WPA_PSK, etc, also the passphrase, it is case sensitive. The setup on your laptop must match.

Sounds like your wireless connection signal if weak.
Monitor your signal strength and try it with a better signal.

No Wireless Connectivity

There are a few things that can cause you to lose wireless connection with your wireless router.
1. Weak signal strength, check the signal strength on your wireless card. If it is weak move the wireless router away from walls and if possible locate the wireless router higher up.
2. Have you secured your wireless router from people near your from unauthorized access? Ie. change the default password, setup encryption use WAP2 or WAP, change the default SSID, and turn off SSID broadcast, and for added protection, enable MAC address filtering which allows only the MAC address/es of your wireless card/s to connect to your wireless router.
3. You could be getting interference from electrical sources such as air conditioners, ard welders, washing machines etc. If so the power supply to the wireless routers and computers etc should be connected to a surge protection power board, better still connect your computer equipment to an UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply)
4. Check the channels of the wireless routers and access points in your area and and change the broadcast channel on your wireless router to an unused channel or one that has the weakest signal strength. This will minimize the interference with your wireless router from other wireless routers and access points in your area.

Degrading connection

If that's the case I will suggest you to reset and reconfigure the router again and try using a different channel like channel 1-6 or 11 then dont forget to enable wireless security to make the connection much stable, then after that if still low signal you can get a wireless range expander that will repeat the signal of your router or you can get a new router.
Sorry for the late reaply, hope that helps..
