SimpleTech 500 GB external hard blinking red light

I have a SimpleTech 500 GB external hard drive(Model 96300-41001-160). It has been working fine for the past 1.5 years and all of the sudden when I turn it on- it blinks a red light ontop of the hard drive about 8 times. The computer does not recognize the hard drive. What should I do to get it to work properly?

clarification answers- The hard drive makes a clicking sound when starting up but as soon as the red light begins to flash; it does not make any sounds besides normal fan sound.

ynotphone- The hard drive does the same thing when i plug it into another computer.

No, it does the same thing as stated before. Do you have any recomendations on the USB to SATA adapter and how to go about this?

Is the hard drive making any strange noises like clicking or singing?

Does this harddrive work on other computers? Just want to see if you are missing the drivers, there are Window updates that your computer does without your knowledge, and sometimes these updates shutoff drivers.

I got one with the same problem. I opened up the case and hooked up the hard drive to a generic usb to sata adapter that i picked up on ebay and it works fine now if a bit clunky looking.

Listen closely to the drive, if it sounds like it is clicking then it is probably not getting enough power through the usb. You should have received a cable with a split dual USB plug for extra power. Make sure that both large USB plugs are in the computer while the smaller one is attached to the drive, this will give it enough power to start working. If it is not clicking and has plenty of power then it could be that it is mapped to a drive letter that is already in use. Under device manager, (right click my computer and select manage then click on disk management) If you see the device in there then you can right click on the bar graph representation of the disk and select to change drive letter and paths. This will allow you to remove the conflict and have it show up again.

Sorry, but that sounds pretty bad. Generally when a hard drive bricks, its done. However you can try taking it in somewhere like the Geek Squad at Best Buy, and have them try and recover all your stored data from it. Good Luck!

Six month old Simpletech 500 GB ext. drive not recognized

I had the exact same problem. Solved by removing Simpletech drive from the 'flashy-box'. Unplugged drive from internals and threw the 'Pinnaferrina' case away and installed it on my motherboards extra sata plugin site (if it has one). If you open your computer case it should be labled on the Motherboeard as such. Mine has four. On the first attempt when I started the computer i Had no OS system showing on first boot-up. Shut off computer and power and shifted SATA (RED Cable) to another Sata plug on Motherboard and it booted right up and I had the drive back. You will need a longer Sata cable than the attached to the Simpletech drive and a power cable that matches the one on the Simletech . Forget looking for the drivers on the net and the Simpletech web site was no use.

Simpletech 500 GB Hard Drive not working

The red light is an indicator of drive failure. The fall it took, especially if the drive was on at the time, could easily cause the drive to break something internally so that it will not function. I found SimpleTech drives to fail pretty easily, even when you're not dropping them. That's been my experience, anyway.

Data recovery is a very expensive proposition. If the hard drive doesn't respond to the interface as normal, they have to be pulled apart and data extracted from the internal platters. This isn't something you can do without a full safe room (dust-free, wearing special suits and all) because any dust can ruin the platter. Since it's so involved, it's usually really, really expensive. Generally, most people don't bother when it reaches that point unless it's business files (like all of your financial data, for instance).

However, if it's something you really need that bad, DriveSavers is one of the best:

Simpletech 500 GB external hard drive - unresponsive

If you really can not get it to work anymore, you could try opening it up and connecting the hdd directly on a IDE/SATA port in your computer. This will only work if you have a desktop, for a laptop you would need all kinds of converters.

Simple tech 500 gb external hard drive

It is not necessarily the hard drive itself that has failed. More likely it is the enclosure and the hardware within in that enables you to access the device. The only way to know for sure, is to connect the hard drive inside your PC and see if you can access it. If it accesses fine when inside your PC, you should be able to buy a new enclosure for your drive and be back up and running with very little effort. If the drive cannot be accessed when hooked up inside your PC, it is unfortunately dead.

Good luck
