Car cranks and runs fine, then once everytime I drive the car I come to a stop and it cuts off. I crank it back up and it runs fine the rest of the drive. Stops and all.
Go into work for the day, crank the car up and it's fine. Drive down the road, get to a stop light.. wham, cuts off. Turn it back on, drive the rest of the way home or downtown or wherever and never cuts off again..
Car doesn't sputter, or anything. Sometime when it cuts off the clock and mileage counter resets to 12:00 and 0000
Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.
Check air-mass sensor, common to VW, Porsche, BMW when it has problems idling. if need to replace get it from a junk yard or ebay and they not cheap for new. auto zone may able to plug in there computer for free it will also help narrow it down, I hate to recommend to go to them half of the time the dawn thing does not give the correct code compair to VW dealer which they charge 75-80 buck just to hook up to their computer which is much more accurate.
This is probably a faulty throttle position sensor. It is common. Is your check engine light on?
If engine is cutting out and guages are weird, car looses power, and memory is lost, then suspect the voltage regulator built into the altenator. Can probably buy a rebuild kit and do it yourself cheaper the $50-200 for another one.
Faulty battery cable or loose connection, short or drain, or faulty altenator. If battery is maintaiable, make sure fluid is full. You can add distilled water to top it off.

Do you know what would cause the reset of the clock and all? I was thinking it could be the control air-bypass, but the resetting of the clock and all has thrown me for a loop...
