It may be a bad system circuit board. Is it fixable? Yes, but at an expense, all depending on exactly what is wrong. I predict the problem to be the horizontal deflection amplifier and the high voltage generator (called the flyback transformer). The cost of repair is likely to exceed $150.

Is it worth fixing? Probably not because the set is nearing the end of its normal life span anyway. Also, the cost of repair is about the same as a new set of equal value. Now might be an opportunity to step up to one of those new fangled sets with wide screen and HD compatibility - although they are still quite expensive!

Did the electrical work being done cause this? It could have, but I doubt it. When ever I go away or know that I am not going to be using a tv for a while, I always unplug it. Little do most people know that even though the set is OFF, it is still ON a little bit. The remote receiver must always be on so that it can receive the signal from the remote commander when you want to watch tv. Therefore, it is always possible for some backward trending pulse to get into the set. For example, an electrical storm can destroy a tv set if it is plugged in - even though it is OFF. But if it is unplugged, it will not be harmed.

If this is the tv with the ssb pannel it probibly is bad,. if it is that board is not repairable, and can cost about $300.00 ish .

Is it hooked up with HDMI cable?

If so try unplugging the HDMI cable and re plugging the cable in, sometimes those cables work loose and if they are not tight, it will cause your screen to flicker. Happens to my TV once in awhile.

Hi gregschirk,
I bought the same model and I am experiencing a similar problem. My HDMI components worked fine before. Now both my cable box and DVD player will not be recognized as HDMI systems. It thinks they are DVI to HDMI connections. Good picture but no sound. Would like to know if there is a fix for this.
Thanks Gilbo72

I have the same TV which had the same issue ( green in picture ) - back on 10/2007. I called Sony. They had their technician replace the optical box ( factory defect ). There was no charge for the repair even though TV was out of first year of warranty. Call Sony.

I had the same problem. The repairman said the Convergence ICs were bad, located on the big aluminum heat sinks on the center board in the TV. He replaces both, and a couple of fuses (that look like resistors).

The tv worked fine for a couple of days then did exactly the same thing. They are coming back out to fix it next week. If there is anything different, I'll post an update.

Sounds like you have caps going bad in video circuit. This will need repair from export. If tv is in warranty, then send back.

If its a rear projection TV. It sounds like the Lamp is shot on the projector, or is going. Look in the back and see if it is lit if it is flickering I would definitely suggest replacing it. If that doesnt repair it then I would ultimately suggest the optical engine which is the projector of the TV
