New inverter in Dell Inspiron 1501 now the LCD screen gets hot!

Laptop display very dark. Ordered and swapped the display inverter and the LCD display lights up and looks good but the lower left corner of the LCD smells like burning plastic.
The inverter was a perfect (physical) fit and looks identical to the original and one from another like laptop (Dell Inspiron 1501).
Could the backlight in the LCD be the problem?
Should I just get a new LCD screen?

I've had the same problem with a Dell Lattitude D531. I've been told that it's the screen itself (which may have led to the original inverter going bad) but that one should also check to make sure none of the screws are making contact with any wires back there.

Bottom right corner of the LCD screen is very hot

I would first search the internet and Dells website to see if there is a recall on this item. If there is, they will replace for free.

Changing the inverter in screens always seems to complicate the LCD. I prefer to just purchase a new screen and everything works great. I replaced an inverter on a couple and had to change them again and again do to them slipping.

Replacing the screen is a bit more expensive but will save you time and money in the long run.

How do I get rid of a blank screen on my laptop

You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Dell Inspiron 1501

If the laptop keeps working, and you can use it on an external screen, then it is likely an hardware fault.

First perform a complete system recovery, like probably already instructed by the Dell support helpdesk. This will practically exclude the possibility of a driver or system problem.

If the problem is hardware , then you may have a faulty inverter board , a bad LCD display/LCD ribbon connection, or a faulty video adapter (integrated with motherboard).

If the problem is the inverter, then the screen will go dark, and the laptop will keep working on external display. This is probably your case.

If the problem is LCD display or ribbon cable, then the display will be blank with light on , and the laptop will keep working on external monitor.

Fault concerning video adapter usually cause the the system not to work at all, and it is uncommon under conditions described.

I just put a new screen in my dell 1501 laptop and

Thats because, screen or inverter was from different laptop or not compatible. For Dell laptops you have to buy screens with inverter together by dell part number.
You should be happy if it's bright enough. There is nothing else to do or try different screen or inverter.

Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop screen will not work.

If you hear the hard drive spinning and you think Windows is working but you can't see an image then :-
You could have a defective screen - a defective inverter or a CCFL lamp or simply the video cable needs reseating. After reseating the video cable and the problem is still there then :-
To determine if you have a LCD screen or video card problem, read this and follow the instructions.

Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom:

  • Screen flashs on red/pink and off.
  • Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal.
  • Picture flickering with dim display or appear black.
  • Picture flickering on and off.
All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight.

The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.
