    1. I bought a Canon PowerShot in 2002 and have great luck untill lately( on vacation) The lens cover became hard to open and close and then seemed to come off. it's track. If the cover is not slide over the lens i can still take pictures but i have to keep taking the battery out to save energy since it doesn't turn off.I took it to an authorized dealer and was told it was going to cost at least $70.00 and the place where i bought it that it is cheaper to buy a new one

This seems to be a very common problem. It is caused by a gear in the door that helps guide the door. It will be broken in two. Details are at:

including an excellent set of fotos, parts list, and directions on taking the camera apart. The easiest fix is to get a new camera front. I got one on e-bay from darntoothysam.com for $25. His service is excellent.

This is exactly what happened to mine right before it stopped working. I do not have a solution. Try contacting Canon directly, maybe there is a solution if you catch it early enough.

Make sure the battery is installed correctly.Try opening, then closing the cover to the memory card and battery compartment while holding pressure against it until you hear it click closed. Then try to power it up. The camera will not power up if the cover is not properly closed.

I dropped my Powershot SD 500 and now the lens cover does not cover the lens. It leaves a gap when closed and does not retract all the way when open. It seems that the resolution on some of my photos is...

A bit of gentile persuasion may be necessary.
Have you tried to push the lens into the camera body?
I believe that the camera has lost track of where the lens is in it's range of travel.

use your finger and see if a small amount of pressure will put the lens back ito position.

In the end, this is not a new camera, if it is dead a better replacement can be had for as little as 120 $US

Canon PowerShot A720IS Lens Cover Won't Close

This blog post outlines repair procedures for stuck lens covers. An A400 is used as an example. The A720 is more complex, but the base procedures are similar:

Lens cover won't open when Canon Powershot A520 Camera turned on

I have two Canon Power shots---the A610, and the A630. The lens cover is starting to hang on my 630 when the lens retracts.

If the lens is extended, take your fingertip and try to move the cover a bit to see if it springs open. If not, then the mechanism within the lens needs to be replaced.

Canon makes a great camera, and I would tell you to try to have it fixed if it costs less than 75 dollars. At 75-100 dollars it's a toss-up. More than a 100 dollars---it's your call.

Setting the date and time

No need to remove part of the camera case. This camera (Power Shot A510) does have a backup battery that is easy to get to. Under the rubber flap where you connect the cable, there's a little door you can pull out with your fingernail. There is a CR1220 battery - can be found at any jewelry store, as it is a watch battery. I replaced that and viola! No more messing with the date/time every time it powers off/on!
