Question about Seagate FreeAgent Go 120 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

Computer cannot recognize the drive now, after months of use.

Tried this drive on three different computers, with working USB ports. All do the same thing, they cannot recognize the drive. It shows up under device manager as "Unknown device". Never have had to download drivers or anything for it, it just worked when you plugged it in.

well I did this, and it doesn't show up at all there. The computer can't tell it's a hard drive, so it's not showing up there. It's just an unknown usb device to the computer. So I'm guessing it's dead?

Computer doesnt recognize drive

Try a different usb port on the computer. Maybe the usb port you are using is bad.

Try the portable drive on another computer and see if it is recognized. If not, the portable drive might be defective.

My computer doesn't recognize my dane-elec 8gb usb stick , although other usb devices do work.

1. Try a different USB port. If other ports recognize it, then the original port is fried. 2. Try a different computer. If the other computer does not recognize it, then your flash drive is damaged.

Good Luck!

It sounds like your hard drive is dead. If you have tried it on a different computer and it did the same thing then your drive isn't booting up and is probably bad.

Toshiba 160 GB Hard drive is not seen by 'new' computer

I have had a similar problems with external drives that only plug into a USB port (no ext power adapter). It is very common that the power supply fed through the USB port is inadequate to power an external hard drive. Some enclosures have a external A/C input to resolve this. Also, some computers (motherboards) only have a select number of USB ports that are powered. Since this device is detected by your other computer and not on the new one, my next attempt would be to locate a USB hub with external A/C power. There is a good chance that this will resolve the problem. By the way, when you plug in the drive does it spin up?

USB Ports don't recognize typical thumb drive, mass storage devices

I'm not completely sure, but this may be a result of faulty drivers.
Try googling the brand name and the word: "Driver"; along with any other details about the device. (Model No. et cetera.)

My drive is not recognized

I've had this problem before.

I tried a different cord and it started working again. Additionally i've had this work for me (see below)

Try This:

  1. Unplug all USB devices
  2. Turn off Ext Hard drive
  3. Shut down computer
  4. Power on ext hard drive (then wait like 1 min)
  5. Turn on computer
  6. Wait for windows to finish loading
  7. Plug in the USB cord from the ext hard drive to your computer (may take up to a minute for computer to recognize it)
  8. If it doesn't recognize it then keep trying it in different USB ports
If it still won't recognize get all the latest windows update and reboot. If that doesn't solve your issue try your external hard drive on some other computers, check to see if drive needs special drivers installed (which most don't).

From SimpleTech's website: "1) I have the drive plugged in but I cannot find the drive in "My Computer", why?
The most likely cause would be not enough power provided by a single USB port on your computer. Unplug the portable drive from the cable and unplug the cable from the computer. Now, plug the cable into 2 USB ports directly on your computer. (If you have a desktop, you should plug the USB cable directly into the USB ports on the back of the computer. If this is a laptop, you should plug directly into a USB ports on the computer. Do not plug into a USB hub or docking station). Then plug the drive into the cable. In a few seconds you should see the drive listed in the "My Computer" window as a SimpleDrivePS."

If all that fails you need to RMA (Return to Manufacturer) your external hard drive. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at http://www.simpletech.com/support/warranty/. If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.
