If your desktop has wireless network card then you can connect the two computer using adhock connection. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/setup/adhoc.mspx

If there is no wireless NIC on the desktop then you can purchase wireless usb http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=179211

SOURCE: Dell laptop with wireless card unable to connect to network

The specs for the Dell Inspiron 6000 with the Intel PRO/Wireless card are list as 802.11b or 802.11g while the router you bought uses 802.11n.

Your best bet at this point would be to either return the linksys router and get an 802.11g model which is slower than 802.11n, but will be supported by your laptop. Or you can buy a 802.11n wireless adapter for your laptop to connect to your new router. Either way the rules of wireless are you need your device and router to be speaking the same wireless standard. So, pick 802.11n or 802.11g and stick with that standard for your gear.

Good luck!

Try plugging the desktop into another router port. Recycle the router. Set both your desktop and laptop to obtain IP address automatically. Make sure router is dynamically assigning IP addresses. Make sure your Domain and Workgroup settings are the same on both machines. Those are just a few ideas. :) Hope it helps.

I have a desktop and laptop mac and I cannot use my router one the laptop. I can access internet by connecting the router to my comcast cable network and to the desktop but not the laptop

What is the Operating system on the laptop ?
If it is XP then in the bottom right hand corner you will find Wireless network connection ( looks like 1 computer monitor). Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is windows Vista, then in the bottom right hand corner you will find 2 computer monitor icon. Use that icon to connect to the wireless network.
If it is Windows 98/ME/2000 then use the adapter utility to connect to the wireless network.
For MAC you will see the AIRPORT icon at the top.

Check the wireless settings of the router first . Make sure that yopu have all the wireless settings of the router. If you are not sure about the settings, then open the router set up and check the settings.

It appears the wireless adapter is not working properly or is not configured with the wireless router's settings Ie. the SSID, and encryption etc.
First install the latest wireless adapter driver.
Next configure the wireless adapter with the wireless router's settings.
It needs to be the same as the wireless settings in the laptops.
If you need further help, please contact me.

The WPA key is the encryption key that is configured in the router's wireless settings and the wireless cards in the laptop and desktop needs to be configured with this encryption setting to allow the laptop and desktop computer to communicate with the router.
You can view the encryption settings in the router's wireless settings or on the laptop's wireless card settings and then apply these encryption settings to the desktop's wireless card (ie. the SSID and the WPA encryption).

This is probably the Software Firewall on your laptop

you should probably tell your firewall software that you have an internal network (Laptop-desktop-printer) you should add the IP range of the wireless network as a trusted network.
