Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

1 Answer

I have Kenmore-4year old, top and bottom. The top works good, but bottom is not cold. Few times I unplug from the power for a day and the unit will work again for a week or two. What's the problem?

Hi, With the information you supplied i'm going to assume there is an ice build up at the rear of the freezer. Your problem is going to be with your defrost system. I will also assume you have the ability to repair this yourself. This is going to be one of three problems with your refridgerator, 1st thing to do is remove shelfs and panel in the back of the freezer...you should see ice build up on the evaporator...don't worry get a hair dryer and melt the ice. Next locate the wires for the heater...using a multi meter test the heater for condinuity...if the heater is bad replace it, If the heater is good replace the defrost thermostat..the stat normally is a barrel looking part clipped onto the evaporator pipe. The last possible problem could be the evaporator fan, have you heard the fan running in the past few hours?..if you are not sure pull the panel out to where you can see fan and watch it over an hour to see if it turns. I have included links with pictures of what the parts you need to check are: http://romulusappliance.com/manufacturers/maytag/refrigerators/575432.JPG defrost stat http://www.hotekalliance.com/UploadFiles/2008627111553382.jpg heaters http://www.applianceblog.com/archives/EvapMotor1018185.jpg evap fan. Hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to comment again. If you decide to get a repair guy in should not cost you any more then $120 - $200 depending on make/model/problem Good luck & thanks for using fixya! I have a Kenmore refrigerator 795690002900 bottom freezer. The freezer is working but the fridge doesn`t work. The temp adjustment for freezer lits up the 6 and 7 will not adjust, the fridge part does not...

Mine bottom freezer 10 or so year old unit did the same thing, problem was the thermal switch ("clicks on") on de-ice circuit was broken. Quick "fix" is to defrost the unit by shutting it off, putting frozen food in a cooler. Once the ice melts the path for blowing cold air UP to the frige will be opened. Will work fine for days until the freezer ices up again.

Most likely the "clicks on" or thermal swithch that is bad and will not let the defroster heater work. Easy fix. Everything is BEHIND the pull out frozen food tray. Remove a couple of screws and you will see all the ice. If I remember correctly my clicks on was just to the right of center and took only 5 minutes to replace after defrosting the unit.

Hope this helped,

Kenmore refrigerator stopped cooling 6 days ago and started working again 2 days later but not very cold.Stopped cooling again 2 days ago.Now it is frosted up in the back of the freezer,What could cause...

There are several things that could be causing this. Your compressor could be going bad. Your freon is low. Think of your refrigerator as a air conditioner. Pull it out and vacuum all the dust from your filters, make sure the water is draining properly and not clogged up. Is your unit still under warranty. How old is your unit. Try this. Unplug the unit for about 5-10 minutes, this will give it enough time for the compressor to cool down. Plug it back in and listen for the compressor to kick on. That's the big black round thing at the bottom in the back of your refrigerator. Listen to it and what the sound is, does it click when it turns on, does it shudder when it turns on. Let me know the sound. By unplugging the unit and doing this the compressor should kick on in 1-3 minutes after plugging it back in. If your unit is over 8 years old you might consider another one. Check out craigslist, as you can get some great deals. Let me know if I can help you further.

Refrigerator not cool, freezer ok

Either the freezer continues to freeze up (most likely due to low refrigerant, due to a leak), or there is an obstruction between the freezer and the refrigerator (refrigerators get their cooling from the freezer).

Given that it works after you defrost it, I'm going with low gas. Call a professional to see if the leak can be fixed. If the unit is more than 10 years old, just get a new one.

Refrigerator will not get cold, but freezer works

Make sure your fan is working ,its located behind the freezers back wall. If it is working the vent from the freezer down to the refrigerator may be blocked (usually with ice). With out a fan you have no circulation but your freezer may look likes its working,it may last 3 days. Also if you can move everything out unplug it turn it off w/ doors open untill all traces of ice are gone this will free up any clogged tubes. Good luck.

Refridgerator Not Cooling

If top is compleatly warm it is probley the fan motor, lot of failures on them. Replacement one will be a different looking motor. Verify motor is not turning, located in the back of the freezer in the top middle, behind small grill. Will see fan blade pointed up, should run whenever compressor is on.

I'll bet the freezer is not as cold as it was. Fully defrost the unit by leaving it unplugged for about 2 days. Check all gaskets. Clean the condenser coils under the unit. Restart. You have too much condensate in the box...either uncovered food or windowshopping or somebody didn't shut the door properly.

Fridge stops working when power goes out.

Good possibility that the electrical contacts have failed (burned/welded) in either the defrost timer (part# 68233-3) or the Cold Control (part# 61002085. An intermittent failure is extremely difficult to track down. Both of the parts I listed total about $80. You can purchase them and install them for less $$ than having a professional do it for you. We would obviously charge more because we would absorb the cost of warranty, labor, drive time, etc... If you choose to replace these components, UNPLUG THE FRIDGE BEFORE HAND!

H20 POURS OUT OF THE UNIT BEFORE BUCKET IS FULL

It sounds like your unit is freezing up. Let it set for a day then set to run on the 3 hr cycle. Also rase the % of humidity to 60 or 65, and if it starts working lower the % setting in a few days by 5% increments until you get to the setting you want. Also read your owners manual troubleshooting section lots of good tips.
