Question about Polaroid PDM-0742 Portable DVD Player

1 Answer

DVD runs for a few minutes and then video and sound stop. It acts like an overheating problem. The mainboard looks OK - no dust or dirt. I've already cleaned the lens.

That's what I suspected, it had an overheating issue at sometime in the past. I just need to find the haystack now.

    Thanks,

Does it do this right away or after awhile? If right away, it could be a bad capacitor from overheating at one time. It would be a swelled capacitor. Possibly resistor as well. You can get tester for these and test the componenets, find the faulty ones and solder in new ones.

Do my Dirt Devil have a restart button it just stop running

Hi! No the vacuum doesn't have a restart button, but it does have a thermal protector that will shut the vacuum down when it is overheated. If your dirt cup was too full this will activate the thermal protector sensor. Clogs and dirty filters can cause this as well. We recommend emptying the dirt cup, tapping out the filter and checking the hose for clogs. The vacuum will come back on usually within 45 minutes to an hour. Hope this helps. The beeping noise is a warning that could be door open, hi interior temp or maybe the compressor is overheating. You might want to inspect the cooling fins for excessive dust or dirt that might be a problem.

My HP presario note book has started to switch off

Computer shutting off after a few seconds to a few minutes

This sounds like an auto shut-off signal given by the processor because of a possible over-heating issue. This usually happens when the laptop has been run for an extended time without having the dust, dirt and debris cleaned from its cooling vents and grills. After time, the thermal paste on the processor bakes under the extreme heat and starts to flake off and lose its efficiency at cooling the processor.
Get a few cans of compressed air that you would buy at an office supply store and using short bursts, blow out the dust and dirt from all the ventilation grills and vents first, make sure the laptop is powered down and battery removed. Then, open all the compartments and clean them out as well including the cd/dvd tray. There is a small black hole on the dvd bezel, just stick an open paperclip in it and it will pop the tray open. Blow a good blast in there to clean the dvd player.
There is the possibility that the thermal paste will have to be replaced, that means you need to gain access to the heatsink and remove from the processor, clean all the old thermal paste from it and apply a small thin layer of new paste to the top of the processor and replace the heatsink, securing it evenly with the attached screws. If you uncomfortable with this step, I would look into one of the local shops to perfrom this procedure for you, because it is critical for the laptop's survival over the long run.

Vacuum shuts down after 5-10 min of use

It may have a problem of overheating. If you havn't cleaned out the thing that holds all the dirt and dust, you may want to consider doing that. There might be a thermostat in it that shuts down whenever it thinks it's to hot.

Xbox 360 Blurry/Fuzzy Screen

The machine is overheating and the graphics chip on the main board is acting up cause of it. Make sure there is no dust or dirt blocking the air vents that would cause the system to heat up more then normal.

If that doesn't do it then maybe think about getting a cooler for the system, here is a website that talks about a few of them. Click here.

If that doesn't help then your mainboard is going bad and would need to be replaced.

I have sound but no picture, can you help

Please give more information, on how you found the problem. Have you tried the video output connected to another monitor to see if the video processor circuits are still functional. You can do this by using cables to the video output of the dvd player to the input of your television. Usually Three wire connections. The yellow connector is for the video and the red and white connectors are for the audio. Make these connections and use your television on a alternative signal source input. This is usually a function button on the television or the remote control. The function is usually labeled input. You can find the correct set-up information with pictures in the owners manuals of the products. If after testing the video ouput from the dvd player. You find that you do have output, then you may have a connection problem between the main board and the LCD screen. These connectors are usually ribbon cables and are a yellow or golden color. They are connected by a clamping connector. The connector is usually released by using a small screw driver to release the clamping device. You can check the connector and see if it looks like it still working. If the connector looks crimped, torn or bent badly it may need replacement. If they look ok , then you may want to use some contact cleaner to clean the connection points and the connector. You can do this by spraying a small amount of contact cleaner on a cotton swab. Take the swab and wipe the connector, cleaning the connection points and then use a small brush with a small amount of contact cleaner to clean the connector. You can also use a can of compressed air to blow all dust and debris from the connector and the circuit board. Make sure to clean all areas of the board as dust and dirt act as a heat blanket and cause overheating problems on the ciricuit board. If all of this seems over your head. Have a friend help you. Or take it to a repair shop for evaluation. There are many helpful videos on you tube that can show you how to do the disassembly and cleaning of the player . Look under cleaning and repairing portable dvd players. If you have a vidoe processor failure, then it may not be repairable. The expense may be more than the cost of just replacing the dvd player. I hope this information helps you with your problem.
