Question about Sony MDS-JB940 Mini Disc Player

1 Answer

The problem with my MDS-JB940 is when recording. It seems to record ok but when the disc is ejected after writing the Table of Contents it is blank. The same happens when a previously recorded disc is altered and has to have the TOC rewritten.

You do have a problem with the overwrite head in this unit. Either the electrical connection to it is bad or the overwrite head does not lower all the way to the MD disk surface. Google for MD overwrite head and Blank Disk problem to find more.

HELLO
Have you tried cleaning the lens? Even minidisc decks have to get the laser cleaned!
Power it off and take the lid off, then using isopropyl alcohol and a cotton bud clean the lens gently in a circular motion. Then try it again.
It may just work for you (:-)

I have no idea why you are going all over FixYa telling people to clean their minidisc lens with alcohol and a Q-tip, but STOP IT.

You may melt the plastic lens, you may cloud the lens, you may leave little cotton fibers on it, you may destroy the transport, and there are several other possible disastrous consequences that I shall not mention.

If there REALLY is a speck of dust on your lens, a soft clean camel's hair brush is the only thing you can use. Or a blast of canned air. NOTHING ELSE.

Not to mention the fact that cleaning the lens will not help any of the problems you post this "solution" to.

    Eliezer!

I find cleaning the lens in a CD/DVD/Minidisc deck to be a very effective method of lens cleaning. By the way, it WILL NOT melt or scratch the lens as you put it. I service all my own equipment with no problems whatsoever and have been for quite a number of years so I know what I am doing. I do own a MD deck where I was experiencing some problems with TOC etc and cleaning the lens WORKED FOR ME. It may or may not help someone else depending on the problem.

The advice I give is in good faith - take it whichever way you choose. But am I going to apologise my advice? Answer: NO! If that has p**sed you off then tough!

hi there is nothing to do by yourself. you need to take your md player to the next authorized service. seems the optical device that reads the discs has worn out, compareable to turntables you need to change the `needle` ;)

Toc not writing

I was going to note that when you first turn the MD recorder on is when it will write the TOC for the disc - so even if you turn it on and press eject, it is smart enough to write a TOC first, then eject the disc. Good find on the battery loss.

Comes up succesfully copied but wont let me finalise

This is almost always a laser problem within the recorder. The recorder can write the disc but needs to write the TOC (table of contents) and can't do it (That's finalising). On occasion, the make of the DVD-r or DVD+r (they are different!) can fail to work on some machines. Try a different make of disc.

My MDS-940JB stops a new recording before the indicated remaining recording time is reached. What can I do?

As the manual says, the RECORD REMAINING time is approximate.

Is your problem a matter of seconds or minutes? Are you sure you are looking at the total recording time on the display?

I need more info from you about what is happening before I can help you.

The 940 is a **** fine machine by the way. I have two of them!

I have just put a blank disc into my sony mds s40 to record but now nothing works on the player....i just keep getting a small red flashing toc, i've tried unplugging from mains then re connecting but...

You may have the disc shutter closed preventing recording. You should never interrupt the recorder when it is trying to write to disc, you probably corrupted the table of contents (TOC) on the disc and need to reformat it to use it again.
If your deck is older you may have worn out the recording heads preventing it from writing to the disc in the worst case.

Rec Error C13 after 10 sec recording

It can't write to the disc for some reason, the disc may be locked and it can't write, it may be dirty, the table of contents may be corrupted or the disc is full to name a few reasons.

I'm trying to record on to my mini disc recorded (sony MDS JB940) and it's flashing Din Unlock c71. how can i solve this problem?

"The definiton in the manual suggests you are trying to record a digital bitstream that is either dead or incompatible with the recorder."

That is completely wrong. DIN UNLOCK means what the first poster said - that you are trying to make a digital copy of a digital copy. You cannot (for legal reasons). Record via analog.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT TRY TO CLEAN YOUR LENS WITH ALCOHOL AND A Q-TIP. It has nothing whatsoever to do with your problem and you may well damage or destroy the lens or the transport.

When you get done recording, do you wait until the "TOC" light stops flashing? If you cut off power before the Table Of Contents is written, then it can't find all your music. Even if you eject, it should still flash a little red TOC or UPDATE before it spits the disc out. Check for that. okay?

Spontaneous MD erasure

Well, depending how the content was recorded, there may be a slim chance to recover the audio. To me it looks like TOC was not written successfully, effectively deleting the TOC.
You can try TOC cloning with this 'blank' MD using another MD player, but your track markers will be lost during the cloning. If it works, at best you will end up with ONE long track. Then you can edit and reset your track markers.

It may be also be a good idea, to try the JE440 carefully with junk content to make sure it still works ok when writing TOC. You may have an intermittent problem too. I'd be very careful editing MD in this unit until it has been confirmed the TOC writing works ok. You may want to check the over-write head assembly and the cable that connects it. Sometimes these cables develop hairline cracks causing intermittend write action.

Check out www.minidisc.org forum for TOC cloning.

Good luck recovering your audio.
