You need first to know who made it and what the model and revision are.

This information is usually on the motherboard itself

Quite often written between the expansion slots or at the very bottom edge.

Armed with that information you can go directly to the manufacturers web site and in the support section you will usually find the manual and other specifications that you need.

we would need to know what motherboard brand and model.
There is a slot for a modem NOT a phone line and you cannot use that foir anything else.
If the motherboard has existing onboard video and no other graphic card slots you must change the motherboard.

Added 1 gb memory ddr400 to motherboard, no added memory

Yes, lots have changed. You changed the memory.

Step one. Goto Start, control panel, system. See how much memory is displayed. If its the same, then you have to update your "BIOS". goto the manufacturers website and click on support by your model # to do this.

If it shows the new memory, then your fine.

Let me know if this fixes it!

I have a motherboard that will not POST. I am not sure the reason, but I suspect the BIOS.

Does the motherboard power -on, Is the CPU installed correctly and is it rated for the board? Is the memory seated properly? I know that these are dumb questions, but they must be asked.
What is the Brand ad model of the motherboard?

PC turns on then quickly turns off

Does it boot fine if you remove the memory you just added? If it does then try switching the memory that was in it before with the memory you just added. You want to first determine if the ram you bought is bad or incompatible.
