Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

My memory stick inexplicably malfunctioned today - USB not recognised comes up on only ONE computer at work but is just dead everywhere else. ICT technicians(I work in a school) tried to go into Management after rightclicking on START button but nothing registers here, also tried some recovery software. No joy - am told tough luck, it's dead. Could heat have fused it? Is it fixable and if so, where do I go and how much would it cost??

If its a Sandisk it probably is pooched.

USB flash drives can fail for a whole gamut of reasons.

It is almost impossible to tell why and repair would be more expensive than the device itself with almost no chance of recovery for anything on there.

I have USB drives that work fine after a washing machine and others that fail within weeks or months for no reason.

Sandisk is a brand I would avoid if choosing a new one.

This is likely due to power consumption, if a hub doesn't have it's own power adapter, then it is drawing bus power from your computer, and will not have enough power to drive larger devices.

My cruzer 4 mb usb stick is suddenly not recognized by the computer

this may have many causes. first possibility: the stick is dead and needs replacement. second: there may be a problem with the usb-port or -controller. if you connect a different usb device to the same port as the stick, and it's recognised, the usb- port is fine and it surely will be the stick which is broken. if the other device isn't recognised either, it's a usb related problem. in this case you should verify if all settings for usb in the BIOS are enabled, if the usb-controller in device manager has been installed supposedly. if not, reinstall, reboot and try again. if this does not work, you need to replace your computer's system board

I have 3 usb ports( two at the back and one on the

Check to see if something else will work on the side port. It may not necessarily be a dead port. Just something you should know too; I used to work for Wal-Mart in the electronics department and they had to recall all their firefly flash drives because they had a tendancy to malfunction. Try using it on a different computer, it might just be a dead flash drive. I hope this helps your problem and I hope your flash drive didn't have anything too important on it :x

They have a good return policy on them. They should be able to get you a new one right away.

Usb not recognised

Hello ak1979 ...

1. You're plugging in your Transend USB flash drive to your computer's USB port (as you've done many times successfully before with this SAME flash drive)?

2. It says "windows not recognise usb drive due to malfunction"?
a. Is that EXECTLY what the error says?
b. Is "it" an error dialog (window that pops up), or an error message from your Windows Event error logs? If a dialog, are there any pertinent error message entries in your Windows Event (System) log [Start > Run > type "eventvwr.msc" (without quotes), then "OK"]?

Try a bit of deductive troubleshooting:
  1. Restart (Reboot) your system [for a fresh start, if you will].
  2. Try plugging in your USB flash drive again, but in a DIFFERENT USB port.
  3. Try plugging in ANY OTHER "known good" USB device into the same USB port(s) used thus far that failed.
NOTE: If you EVER get any indication Windows recognizes the flash drive (like no error msg, or it shows in "My Computer"), IMMEDIATELY perform a "Check Disk" on it:
  1. Start > Run... > type "cmd" (without quotes), then "OK".
  2. Type "chkdsk DRIVE_LTR: /f" (without quotes), then hit "Enter" [where DRIVE_LTR is the drive letter of your USB drive]. EXAMPLE: chkdsk E: /f
Good luck, and please post back:
  • to provide any corrections/updates/clarifications.
  • if you have any further questions.
  • to let me know how things work out.

Problem with USB Flash

It is possible the memory stick is faulty. Are you using xp or vista? If so it should be recognised instantly. I bought one the same a couple of weeks ago, and it recognised it instantly, and I'm using xp.

Try it on another computer if possible, even where you purchased it. Just tell them you think it's faulty. If it works on that computer then you have a problem with either your usb ports or you have a virus.
