I need to reset the power n password for ibm t42

Is it the power-on password, or the disk password? The disk password can be reset to allow the disk to be re-used, but the process will wipe the data from the disk. There are bootable software tools like the IBM dft32 disk utilities If it is not the disk password, read on. Generally, all password are difficult to remove on Thinkpads. The passwords are stored in a non-volitile storage area, usually a serial flash memory device, and there is no general process for resetting them. IBM's solution is to replace the motherboard. If you google for +thinkpad +atmel you will find hardware solutions to try to reset the power-on password, but I have built some of the devices, and never managed to get them to work. If you have a system with a TPM chip, even these are unlikely to work, because the TPM checks all changes. These are corporate grade laptops, and are deliberatly very difficult ot hack.

This varies from laptop to laptop, some ibm laptops have a special memory chip for the password that will prevent users from reseting the password.

In most of the laptops out there you can remove the bios password by removing the 3 volt memory battery inside, but in ibm laptops there may be a rom chip that stores the password, so it doesn't get removed even after removing the battery, there was some work around solution posted online somewhere, but its not guaranteed to work.

IBM t42.. I don't know if this laptop has any special bios password protection.

Try removing the internal battery and see if it helps, leave it unplugged for a while.

if this doesn't solve the issue theres probably a rom chip that stores the passwords, the ibms are made a little better than the average laptops out there, not as easy to bypass.

if you get a system disabled xxxxx code if you enter the password wrong 3 times this may be unlocked at a local ibm service center, even I could give it try since I have access to some of the manufacturer code calculators.

if the bios battery didn't solve the problem and you don't get a disabled message either, then you might have to sort a few pins on the bios chip to reset it, thats something you will need to look into on your own and do at your own risk, theres also the guide somewhere online for creating a tool to remove the password.

last option is to take the ibm to a service center to get it unlocked, this one is the best and recommended option for you.

SOURCE: how to unlock an IBM

Power off the computer
Remove the memory cover on the bottom side of the computer.
Short-circuit the two password pads or put a jumper on the contacts to short the circuit.
Under the short-circuit condition, power on the computer and wait until the POST ends. After the POST ends, the password prompt does not appear. The power-on password is removed.
Reinstall the memory cover.

SOURCE: IBM t42 comes on, beeps twice and goes off, connected and battery

Yes it is the fan, get a can of compressed air and clean the air vents and the CPU fan with that, also i would check into the CMOS battery as it could be dead and needs replacing.
As the laptop starts up hit F1 when you see the IBM logo and check the date and time, that will be a clear indicator IF the CMOS battery is dead because it will not be the right date and time, it should however let you into windows if you put the date and time right (it may take a couple of attempts)

Good luck

Ibm thinkpad t42 bios password problem

To reset the BIOS password read the information from this link.

In case of your laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper.

Ibm t42 thinkpad t of svp password

Hi, If you are talking about the Boot, HDD, Bios password, then the only one way to recover it is to implement a chip on the systemboard to shorcut the protection or to contact Lenovo for a systemboard replacement. Unfortunalty, no other ways other round. Thanks and have a nice day J-

How can I change or repair the DC Jack on an IBM ThinkPad T42?

You have to completely disassemble the whole laptop in order to get to the motherboard & actually remove the original soldering to remove the DC power jack from the motherboard. One thing you need is the right tools (Screwdriver) and the soldering gun.

Google & research a guide for disassembling your IBM Thinkpad T42

My previously healthy Thinkpad T42, will not post.

Hi,
The Thinkpad T42 doesn't have a reset button on it like the older IBM's used to.

There could be a problem with the battery. With the machine turned off remove AC power and then the battery. Plug in AC power again and see if the laptop will boot without the battery.
If it boots let it load up as normal and then shut it down again, reinsert the battery and try to boot it up. If it boots fine, if not then there is a problem with the battery.

Please post back if you need anymore advice.

Good luck.

Where is the wireless switch located on the IBM thinkpad T42

Unlike the newer laptops, the T42 doesn't have it's own wireless switch. So in order to get the wireless working, you need to also make sure that the Power Management driver and the Hotkey driver are installed as well.

Load the drivers in this order:

1) Power Management driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4GXPEG
2) Hotkey driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-68000
3) Wireless Driver - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-70504
After downloading it, you must go into C>Drivers>Win>Wlanint and run the setup file from there.
4) Access Connections (Optional) - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4ZLNJB

How do you know what password you need? Windows starts and then it askes for a password for ibm that I have never set. Is this the power up password?

I am afraid you can reset it without view the password.
Step 1 : If your account has administrator privileges you can simply reset the password Click start > right click my computer > manage > click local users and groups > users > right click administrator > set password and enter the new password twice.
Steo 2 : If you don't have access to an account with administrator privileges then you'll need to do an offline reset tools: Windows Password Unlocker . I believe is the tool i've used to do it in the past on XP.
