My Nikon D40x will not always take a picture when I push the shutter and will not focus whats wrong with it?

I have the same problem and I make this: take out the zoom lens from the body and put it again. The auto-focus comes back. Another my solution: Push autofocus buton to M (manual) and back to A (auto). Then sometimes starts again to work autofocus. But still I know it is not final solution...

Which Nikon S.L.R. cameras can I use my 70/300mm AF-S Nikor and still maintain auto focus, it is currently on a D40x

Every one (assuming the camera supports autofocus in the first place, of course--old film Nikons didn't). The lens has an autofocus motor, so the camera doesn't need one.

Film Nikons supported autofocus starting with the N2000. (Actually, the F3 also had autofocus capabilities, but used a different system). All the digitals support autofocus.

Nikon D50 with Nikon DX 18-55 lens will not focus

Hi,
Sorry to hear about your lens. If you are able to autofocus and take pictures with any other lens, then it means that your problem lies with the kit lens. If you can take picture in manual mode, but not in autofocus mode, then the AF motor in the lens in not functioning. I had the same thing happen to my 50mm 1.4 lens.

Depending on your location, there are Nikon repair centers in Melville, NY and Torrance, CA.
Hope this helps,
Andrew

Nikkor 18-55mm lens on Nikon d50 locks up in autofocus mode.

The "err" is generally when you have the aperture set to something other than "F22" with the aperture lock on. As far as the lens, you should take a pencil and use the eraser end on the electrical contacts both on the lens and camera and ensure that they are clean. Often times, cameras will respond, but not fully, if some of the contacts have build-up on them. If this still doesn't work, take the lens to a camera shop or ask a friend to borrow their nikon and try using the lens on a different camera to see if it is indeed the lens or the camera. Doing this will help you determine which needs to go to the repair shop.

Can't autofocus Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens

The lens has an autofocus motor, but because it is an older model, it will not autofocus for the D40(x), D60, or D5000, which have more stripped down components. I advise you exchange the lens for the newer model, or return the D5000 and get the D90 for just a bit more.

Nikon 18-55 zoom lens doesn't autofocus

You might like to check if the A/M slider switch on the lens by the Nikon label is set to A.
It sometimes gets moved accidently.
Set to M the lens will not autofocus.

Quantaray 2x AF for Nikon

A 2x tele-extender will rob you of two stops of light. This is simply a matter of physics: you're looking at only one quarter of the scene, so you'll only get one quarter of the light.

You specified neither the camera body you're using nor the lens you're using the tele-extender with. Most Nikon bodies will not autofocus with lenses slower than F/5.6. (Actually, they might, but F/5.6 is what Nikon specifies.) With the two-step penalty, a lens would have to be F/2.8 or faster in order to autofocus.

The solution is to either get a faster lens ($2000 or so) or to switch off the autofocus and go manual.
