Question about Whirlpool Dryers

1 Answer

How hot is the Vent temp of my new Duet?

I just bought a Whirlpool Duet pair. The installer/delivery guys said that my vent for the dryer now needs replaced. My old dryer used the plastic flex vent hose connected to the pipe that goes between the walls to just below the floor and then to the outside wall to vent. It appears to have blown in insulation around the vent pipe. My question is Does the heat coming ot the dryer become so hot that I should replace it using a new path?

It's not the temperature of the air that is the problem. The air is seldom over 160 Deg F. If you have a vent fire the piping needs to last long enough without melting to starve the fire of oxygen in the hopes of extinguishing. Rigid aluminum piping is best suited for this, Rigid flexible is next. The tin foil and white plastic offer little resistance to melting if a fire should begin. The melting would allow the fire to replenish oxygen and support the burning process. The main caution here is to keep your dryer and vent clean...at least annually.

If the duct inside your wall is rigid metal all the way from the dryer to the house exit you need to do nothing to it . Replace the vent between the dryer and the wall with rigid metal 4" piping or hard flexible aluminum piping. If the duct inside your wall is either of the least effective types you need a new run of vent for the dryer to avoid a fire.

You can't use white plastic or flimsy flexible aluminum that feels like aluminum foil when you touch it.

Testimonial: "That makes great sence. After closer inspection, plastic flex hose is below the floor. IT WILL BE REPLACED. Great answer. THANKS, Les"

A Whirlpool Duet dryer, purchased new 11 yrs ago. Turn it on it runs for 5 minutes & stops. Sometimes have to wait a few minutes before it restarts. Any suggestions as to what the problem is?

Hello Jacquie Burgess,

Thermal cut off triggered - Part number 279973
(you MUST verify part number).

Sadly... I went out onto my favorite site looking for High-temp
cut-off or thermal limiters (ELECTRONIC)... but "APPLIANCEPARTSPROS" failed to RE-CONFIRM their very OWN number they gave out... wp697772

A direct call FROM YOU would be appropriate...

BETTER STILL... would be YOUR OWN part number from your
owner's manual...

However... the are MECHANICAL reasons your dryer may actually be reaching OVER-TEMPERATURE situations...

and your machine could be correctly shutting down for SAFETY REASONS:
TWO Principal reasons would be

- A BLOCKED dryer vent (usually lint)
- A Broken/Defective Blower

To check AIR-FLOW... You outside dryer vent should be putting out a POWERFUL stream of hot air..

If you do NOT feel that powerful air flow... disconnect the vent behind your machine and check it again there...

If there is a difference you HOUSE DUCT needs to be clean
(do this regularly to prevent FIRE DANGER).

Then...
IF no powerful air flow is felt directly behind your machine... your BLOWER IS DEFECTIVE (see below)

I had a similar issue on my Kenmore Elite (turned out to be a blocked VENT (BIRD: inside the MACHINE).

Else your HIGH-TEMP LIMITER is DEFECTIVE and needs replacing (possibly... WP3391914, (you MUST verify)).

Hope this helps.

My Whirlpool Duet DRYER--the clothes are wetter than when I put them in & there is now water sitting in the bottom. It does have a steam setting, but I'm not using that one. It's 4 years old.

Check your exhaust vent! If you have an obstruction, the steamy air will have no where to go, then your air-conditioning temps inside can cause the water to condense in the vent tube... Even if the vent is just open to the hot summer air and the clothes sit in the machine the difference in temps between inside and outside can cause these symptoms...

I have A whirlpool duet dryer and it is getting hot but taking about 3 hours to dry a small load of clothes... my landlord has come and cleaned the vent from the outside... Could it be a heating element?

I would check behind the dryer to see if the vent is crushed. Everytime you lean against the dryer there is a chance of crushing the elbo on the back of the dryer restriction air flow. Very common problem.

Dryer won't heat up

You've got an intermittent open circuit in a gas valve solenoid---for about 10 to 20 bucks you can buy a pair on line and do replace them as a pair if one is going the other will also soon.
If you keep messing with it it may stop igniting completely---then you can test the 2prong solenoid to be sure this is the problem---should have about 50ohms.
