Question about HP Compaq Presario V2000 Notebook

2 Answers

Windows does not start up upon booting, instead a black screen comes up and a few lines come up saying something along the lines of media not found. and this repeats itself without ever leaving the screen. it would go on until i died if it was left that way. want to start up windows to extract files from it before i burn it to the ground. somebody give me some advice as to how to get past this silly screen and onto better things. thank you.

Things to try:

1. shut down the computer. Disconnect the power to the laptop and pop out the battery, with the battery removed and the laptop unplugged from power, press the power button on the laptop once and let it sit for 10 mins then pop the battery back in and plug in the power cord and turn it back on.

2. make sure the computers bios is set to boot from the hard disk drive first. (press the key that it requests for setup usually its the F1 F2 or delete keys) and set the hard disk to boot first then reboot the computer

3. make sure no cd or dvd's are in the computer. and that you don't have any usb devices plugged into the computer. reboot computer

4. if all these methods fail then the next step is to take the laptop in to a computer shop to have its data recovered if possible, as your hard disk is non bootable or bad.

NOTES: My best guess is the hard disk is non bootable or bad. Which is bad.You would need a new hard disk installed and the operating system restore disks from the manufacturer for your laptop reloaded.
and your data is most likely gone.

expert notes below:
if you are a total do it yourselfer see about booting the computer with a knoppix boot cd and an usb external hard disk or flash drive attached to the computer and with luck you can copy some of the data. Best of luck.

Blue screen crashes, error says something about video

My first guess is that you received a video driver update from Windows Update and it isn't working. If you can get the first couple off lines of the Blue screen code you can narrow it down. Here are a few things to try. First off, turn on (boot) your PC and tap the F8 key the whole time as it boots up. You should go into a black screen that asks you how you want to start windows. This is called starting windows in safe mode.(It uses basic drivers to bypass the issues you are having so you can get in and roll them back.) If you can get into windows now then you know its a driver problem. You will need to go into your device manager and locate your video card drivers in the properties of the device. There will be an option to roll them back. I would try this first and see if it works. You could also try a system restore instead if you have that on, this will allow you to revert you system to a period before the issue began.

Monitor comes up black i can see the cursor but nothing else any ideas? it boots normally but once past the boot screen its all black with just the cursor showing

Nevermind the more I thought about it, your not getting to the operating system. The PCs used to say something to the effect of 'operating system not found' after the POST if it could not find a boot device. I think that's what's happening here, you have to go into to BIOS and see if it can detect the hard drive. When the laptop boots look for a message saying 'press F1 for setup' or something along those lines... if it comes up too quick to see start hitting F1, Esc, Del keys right after the power lights comes on, BIOS is usually one of those keys. Once in BIOS look for a 'devices' type tab and search for where it reads the hard drive If there's nothing there then its your problem, and you need to get the BIOS to autodetect it. Respond if you have questions.

Ok try this, at boot up press F8, when the Menu comes up, choose Safe Mode, but this time instead of going to the desktop, choose System Restore, follow instructions, and when the Calender type window comes up, simply choose a time BEFORE, the time it went faulty. This should completely restore you to working again. As long as there are NO other problems.

Black screen with blinking cursor upon start up

You don't say what Windows are you using.
Anyways, it seems like you have a corrupted BOOT problem.
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, you can insert your Windows installation CD, and choose the "Repair my pc" option.
Windows will do it automatically fro you, and you'll be up and running in a couple of minutes.

PXE-E61 media test failure on Acer Aspire 5050 laptop

Yes, your analysis of the problem is correct. The problem could be with the hardware & while you are trying to reinstall the Windows OS, the software checks on all hardwares before installing. The best solution would be to take your system to a nearest service provider & get the problem rectified. Once the problem is rectified by them, try to reinstall the OS along with them, so that if there is any other problem apart from the above they will be able to help you.

T 43 says "operating system not found"

Sounds like you have a bad hard drive. Boot up with a Windows CD and select repair at the setup menu. It should dump you to a command line. Type "chkdsk /f" without the quotes and it will check the hard drive for errors. When it's done, reboot normally and it should get you into windows. If it doesn't, replace the hard drive and install windows on the new HDD.

Get the discs that came with your computer and boot off them. When your computer is on the dell screen when you first turn it on it will say something like "hit f3 for boot menu". You need to hit the button it specifies and select your cd drive. It will say press any key to boot from cd, and as you may have already guessed you want to hit any key. Then when a windows screen comes on you need to hit r and follow the onscreen instructions from there.
