This usually indicates that the screen is a little busted. If you have a warranty, send it in right away to have it replaced. The whole screen has to be replaced, it has nothing to do with the video card. If you do not have warranty, cost of replacing may be equal to that of the laptop.
It could be from opening or closing your laptop to harshly or from excessive pressure on the screen (if, for example, you pack your laptop in a backpack along with 30 lbs of books) or from one hard hit.
Just to make sure which component to blame for your display, you can try to do the following tests with your laptop:

- When ever the lines are occurring, fix it to an external monitor (you should have a port). If the distortion do not occur there, your display is gone.
- Check if the lines occur during booting. That is, before any drivers are loaded. You need to look carefully. If not, it may be a faulty driver. Do you know how to look for the correct driver for your machine?
- If distortion occurs during booting, it may be faulty graphics card. To check it further, you can take a bootable CD/DVD and boot from that, and see if the display is correct; if not, the the graphics card is gone. This is very unlikely in your case.
Hope it helps. Do let me know, for anything else needed.

Unplug the monitor video cable from the computer. Power on the monitor and see if you get the same results. If so then your monitor is defective.

Sounds like your screen has developed a problem. You wouldn't necessarily see any damage when you opened the bezel up. I would suggest you take it to a repair shop and have them test it and replace the screen if necessary

Graphic card problem.

Your graphics card is bad. The reason you don't see it on your bios screen is because it is not displaying in the high resolution high color graphics. Once your card starts displaying high resolution high color, then you get the lines. You need to replace your graphics card.

Sylvania 6427FF TV displays wavy verticle lines at top of the screen.

I would suspect defective filter capacitors in the sweep circuits as well as the power supply source voltages.
