My compaq presario cq 40 dvd drive read dvd but not read cd.vcd

Make sure you're trying to read a good store bought music cd and not one some friend made for you. Some computers have problems reading some of the cd's made by someone.

I have a NEC Lavie L LL550/3 that doesn't read

The CD and DVD reading portions of the drive use different sensors, so it's possible it would stop reading DVDs but still continue to read basic (audio) CDs.

The question is, will the same, working audio CD work while booted up fully?

If it does not, it may be a matter of a driver problem; unfortunately drivers cannot be found online for this model. Check this thread and make a post or comment to try to find someone who may have the drivers you need.

Won'tb reada dis

Try uninstalling the drivers for the CD drive from the device manager, then reboot. The machine will find the drive and reinstall the drivers automatically. If this is a simple driver glitch, then this will fix it. If it doesn't fix it then the drive may have gone out. Let me know if there are any messages that go along with the drive not Reading the disc, or if the drive doesn't recognize the disc at all, after trying the driver reinstall.

IBM ThinkPad T40 2GB Max RAM

The T40 has two ram slots, you can put a 1g chip in each totaling 2g. If the chip will remove, then it is changeable. Vista needs a minimum of 256 to run, so, when you change BOTH chips to equal 2g it will probably read 1.744g, or it may read the full 2g. If it only reads 1g, then the second slot under keyboard may have malfunctioned. It could also be that the 256 chip is bad and your really only running 512 now. With all that said, in order to achieve 2g, you will need to put a 1g chip in each slot.

Problem with lappy reading music discs and programs

Most DVD drives have two lenses - one for CD's and another to read DVD's. It could be that the CD lens on your drive is failing. Try using a CD lens cleaner (available in most electronic shops). If that doesnt work, then the lens is scratched and will have to be replaced.
If that is the case, then I suggest buying a new DVD drive, as it would be cheaper than attempting a repair.

Can not read SD card, game pad

You need to install your camera's drivers from the disk that came with it.
Unplug your camera from the computer >> insert the camera's driver CD >> install drivers >> restart the computer >> connect your camera via USB >> a windows pop up will let you know that it has found a new device. If you don't see the pop up this means your USB port is malfunctioning and it's normally from a malfunctionnig motherboard.

If you want to connect it through your card reader I'm affraid you need to buy a new card reader that supports 2G SD card. your current card reader does not supports 2G cards.

Kind Regards
