Question about IBM ThinkPad T30 2366 Notebook

2 Answers

When I insert a DIMM into my IBM T30 RAM slot, it is loose and is not recognized by SI. When I hold pressure on the DIMM, it is recognized. The RAM slot has apparently increased in size, possibly due to heat, and no longer provides a snug fit for a DIMM. Is there a fix? Thank you, Jon

Replacing the memory slot is not an option. A new mother board would be a better solution. I am wondering if there is a way to compress a memory slot. I have considered heating with a soldering iron and then compressing with pliers. My concern is that I will damage the slot or mother board. Is there a better idea?

Try padding up the DIMM terminals with lead solder to make it tight and snug it fit into the RAM slots.

It looks like common problem: my OLD T30 can see only one 256mB memory slot. Does it make sense to install one 512 mB unit? Can T30 recognize 1gB memory? Thank you in advance

Hello

Yes, you system will support up to 1GB of ram, so, if i were you i would suggest that you buy a 1GB chip, this will give you the best performance upgrade. And, ram is so cheap at the moment, so, i think it will be the best option.

Let me know if you found this helpful.

Kind regards

Adding memory, new total not recognized: IBM Thinkpad R51e-1844

Ram should always be paired. Same type, speed and size in each slot. You may have 1 SIMM/DIMM/DDR that has 2 sides of chips and the other with 1 which will do exactly what you state. RAM reads across the chips simultaneously. So if you have a different one in each slot it can go bonkers and do goofy stuff on you.

IBM THINKPAD T30 memory slot problem

This problem can be fixed very easily. Find some one who knows how to solder and have them reflow slot #2. My T30 has run great for along time then all of a sudden I only had 1/2 my memory. I did what everyone should do in that situation I Googled it and it brought me here. I happen to be Service Tech for a cell phone company. I took my Laptop to work with me and reflowed the side mounts and every pin around the slot. It has worked flawless ever since.

Memoryt slots problem

This is a common problem, see this link for guidence. http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_failing_memory_slot

The only effective solutions are to replace the motherboard with one that has been modified by IBM to correct the issue or re-solder the cracked solder joints. If you choose to try the re-solder route yourself and have little or no experence with solders I recommend searching for additional links that explain more about the process. It does work if done right, but sometimes it takes more then one attempt when you're being careful not to get the motherboard too hot.
