Got rid of my problem!
In an act of despair I started to poke around the inside of the printer with a wooden match. Especially I found a small black lever mentioned on a Dell web site (general paper jam help page) that could be pressed a little. It is placed just a little bit right of center behind the carriage and just above the roll that feeds the paper beneath the printer heads. I'm not sure if this was what finally did it, but now the paper jam problem has gone away.
Another thing I noticed is that my carriage is now moving to center when I open the top. When the paper jam error was present it always moved to the far left (so I could remove any jammed paper, I suspect).

If there is a error msg on the operator panel of the printer, try the following steps
1.press and Hold the start button and the cancel buttom on the printer and holding them down unplug the Power adapter from the printer , wait for abt 30 secs and then put back the power adapter and then release both the buttons.
2. manually move the rollers present inside the paper tray, lift the printer and shake it firmly , turn the printer upside down and gently tab on it , put back the power adapter and then turn on the printer , if it still gives the same error msg , then purchase the new printer

SOURCE: Dell 1815dn paper jam.
you should be able to gain access to where the paper is jammed if you remove the paper tray, then remove the duplex assembly. However, if the jam is further inside the unit, you will need to remove the highvoltage power supply to gain access to that area. I have provided the instructions for both.
To remove the duplex assembly, orient the printer so you are looking at the back of the unit,
Grasp the duplex unit handle and pull it toward you.
Next...Orient the printer with the front cover face down on the surface and the bottom of the chassis facing you as shown below.
If you still can not get the paper out, then you will need to further disassemble the unit by removing the high voltage power supply. This will expose the rollers located underneath. See below...
Remove the HVPS securing screws.
Rotate the HVPS down until the cables can be accessed.
Disconnect the HVPS cables.
Remove the HVPS from the chassis.

give this a try
Load a piece of thick paper, for example photo paper and press the resume button (may be diffrent button on diffrent models) a few times to the printer picks up the paper and puts it through the machine.
