The problem lies in your ram. Pull the modules, swap their positions and reboot. The contacts are dirty and by removing them, they again make proper contact. Blow out dust. You will be fine.

Monitor keeps going into sleep mode and it won't turn on so i can use it.

Monitors go to SLEEP mode when there is no computer signal coming into them. As soon as a computer signal reaches the monitor, it will automatically wake up and show the images in the screen.

More likely to have bad caps with bulging top in the power supply, that is the first place to look for the monitor this old, see example of failed monitos due to bad caps: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums

Monitor switches on. shows screen for about 5

Make sure your computer is working properly. Hook up another known working monitor up to the computer and turn it on. If you get video on the known good monitor then that means the original monitor is bad. If you don't get video on the know good working monitor then that means the computer has no video output and the computer would need to be troubleshooted.

My monitor a compaq FP5315 has a white box bouncing around the screen reading signal out of range when i switch it on...any ideas please..

It means that the PC is putting out a frequency that is not readable by the monitor. Basically comes down to the hertz that the computer is set to.

To fix this:

What you need to do is go into the boot menu by pressing and holding the F8 key just after the text of the boot process begins appearing on your screen until a list of options comes up on the screen. One of those will be to enable VGA mode. This will set Windows back to using the basic 800 x 600 resolution. Highlight that option (using the arrow keys) and then press Enter. Your screen should work just fine now.

From this point you can choose a resolution that fits into the range of the monitor. Be sure to "Test" the settings before applying them to be sure you don't run into the same problem again

Normally like thise it sound like your have problem with the backlight insideLCD.There is one condition with LCD is that if the backlight inside blink or spoil then it just cut off the supply that mean screen become black. If you switch on again it work but after sometime it should should shutdown again.Ask technician the check for you, don't do it yourself cos inside high voltage...danger.
