The problem is a faulty nVidia chipset...2 solutions for you:
1) Take the laptop (or ship it) to a repair facility with a BGA machine to reflow the chipset (I work at a central depot doing this exact repair among other things, main customer is radio shack so take it there)

2) Replace the motherboard

Sorry, but this is an *extremely* common failure with the DV2k/6k/9k product line, in addiiton to the Compaq side of the aisle....this failure affects ONLY the AMD-based laptops...the Intel's work beautifully, although they have their built-in video issues, but thats for another time....

Two questions:
Q1: Do any other switches/touch buttons work? If not then follow the procedure below:
1. turn off computer 2. Remove battery and power plug 3. hold down the power button for 20 secs 4. reattach battery and power plug 5. Turn on laptop. 6. All buttons will work including the wireless
Q2: Do you see the HP Wireless Assistant icon in your system tray? If not then go to start menu and search for the above.
Once you locate it open the program and check if your installed wireless device is on or turned off. In case of the latter, Turn it on from the action list. Once your device is on the touch button will work.

It sounds like your WiFi switch was somehow shut off.

hpweb_1-2_minus.gif Wireless device is turned off or disabled The power to the wireless network and Bluetooth devices is controlled by a switch or button on most computers. It is possible to accidentally bump the button and turn off the wireless service. c02230159.jpg On most computers, there is an LED light that glows blue when the wireless device is turned on and enabled, and glows orange when off or disabled. Some newer models use different a different color scheme, see the user guide for more information. To turn on and enable the wireless device, do the following:
  1. To turn on the wireless device, simply move the switch to the on position. On some computers, the switch is actually a touch point on the panel above the keyboard.
  2. To enable the wireless device, right-click the HP Wireless Assistant (disabled) icon c02448899.jpg and select Open Wireless Assistant . Click Turn On . The HP Wireless Assistant (enabled) icon c02448900.jpg will display.
  3. Or you can try pressing the Fn and the F2 keys at the same time to enable your wireless adapter.

My latitude won't find a wireless connection. Always says that the cable is unplugged. How can I fix this? I just want to be able to connect using wifi and not DSL or a modem. Thanks.

There will always be a cable unplugged if you are using a wireless internet connection, that will refer to your hard wire connection.

First, you want to make sure there is a wireless access point nearby (i.e., a router in your home, or a WiFi hotspot). If you don't have one of those nearby, your computer cannot magically connect to the Internet. You can right click the wireless icon in the lower right-hand corner of your screen, and click "View Available Wireless Networks." This is assuming you are letting Windows manage your wireless connection, otherwise it should be something similar. If you do not see any wireless networks after refreshing, make sure the wireless on your notebook is turned on, and not disabled by a switch or button. Finally, if you still don't see any wireless connections, test to see if any wireless networks are available with another notebook if available, to rule out any problem with the notebook itself.

I have a hp Compaq nx6110 laptop. I wish to switch the wireless feature on but the wireless button does not seem to activate it

Sometimes if you disable the wireless from HP wireless assistance then it will not get enable even if you try to start it from the switch. So first check that the wireless is on from HP wireless assistance. This kind of issue come most of the time when drivers are corrupted or not installed correctly. Please perform the below steps to get the issue resolved. I don?t know the exact OS installed on your laptop, however you can check the link below and click on the appropriate OS and you will get the latest BIOS update and drivers available for your laptop. But perform the below steps first in order. ø Check - wlan autoconfig is enabled under services list (run>services.msc) ø Enable HP wireless assistant. ø Check - wireless card is installed in Device Manager. ø Check whether the computer is able to detect the wireless networks in range to ensure wireless LED is not defective. ø Update wireless driver and BIOS. ø Reseat wireless card Link for updating the drivers and BIOS. http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=449878&taskId=135&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=449877&lang=en&cc=us Plz write back with current OS ,if you get any problem in doing above steps.

Wireless switch is always "red"

Uninstall the wireless adapter in the Device manager, then download and reinstall the driver by connecting the laptop directly to the modem with a Cat5e cable.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
