I had a similar problem with a compaq I had - it was overheating. It didn't even matter if it was sitting on something flat like a table - the fan still couldn't keep up. I eventually just ended up propping the side of the computer up (where the fan is) just so it could **** in air a little better.

Are you immediately able to turn it back on and run for another hour? Or do you have to wait a little while before you can power it back up. Were you using it when this happened?

Overheating? check cpu fans first also check cpu temp in the bios (if thats possible)

this is more likely the cause of this problem.

Possibly overheating, does the laptop get hot? Buy some canned air and blow the dust out from the holes of the laptop, make sure its turned off before doing so.

Check the power settings:
there are several methods to bring up that window, however in WindowsXP, click: Start, Settings, Control Panel, Power Options.

You didn't mention whether it does this on battery or AC power, but through the Power Options window you can set different schemes depending upon which power source you are using.

Above the light is a temp sensor with a blue and white wire plug. This sensor is the problem for all these shut downs in my opinion. Pull out plug and jump it with a wire or paper clip bypassing sensor. Tv should work now!!!!

It shuts down to protect itself from overheating, looks like you tried to use it too much without sorting the problem out.
You can try and give it a good clean out. Google cleaning computers.

If the unit shuts down almost immediately without sound, you have an electronic failure of the audio amplifier.

However if you must play the unit up above quiet background levels, you likely have a shorted speaker wire. With home theater systems, you have the luxury of trying different surround modes and speaker level settings. It's not unusual, for example, to have a loose wire strand going to the center speaker. In stereo, the system works fine. As soon as you switch to a surround mode, the amplifier senses the short and shuts down to protect itself.

Check those wires really close - I bet you'll find it there.
