MSI FX5200-T128 :: Hard-Freeze

Hi
I have FX5200-T128 mounted on Asus K8N motherboard and installed WinXP SP3 with latest official VGA driver from MSI 72.12
My PC gets booted normally, but I try to launch any application, PC goes into HARD-FREEZE mode and then nothing works and needs hot-boot. This is happening across Oses (with WinXP/Ubuntu 9.04 linux). Please help me.

    Thank you for your suggestions.

Unfortunately, I do not have on-board/separate VGA. Yes, the PC boots up normally and runs if I'll let it untouched. One think I noticed, it sometime freezes during OS installation (after installing devices screen of XP) itself !!!

But when I'm not using any driver (uninstall VGA adapter) for the card going in safe mode, the PC functions normally and the rate of FREEZING significantly decreases, but its difficult to work with terrible slow graphics.

I have also tested my 512MB RAM with memtest86+ which clears all passes. Also checked with BIOS settings like "Disable Fast Write", "Disable SBA", but no luck.

Yes ... I have also tested the drivers directly from nVidia which could not make me smile :( But there is no power supply plugged on this card. It has been configured for 1.5V from BIOS. Yes... I'll test card the in another PC. Thank you.

    Another observation I found today.

I installed the official latest driver 72.12 from MSI and then gone to Display Properties -> Settings ->Advanced -> Troubleshoot.

From there I reset the "Hardware acceleration" to "None" from "Full". Now seems its working with improved graphics.

Do you have to add any comment on it ? Should I try moving the slider and see where it breaks ?

You could try using the driver for the FX5200 directly from Nvidia. Maybe the MSI drivers are causing the issue. If not try using the video card in another computer and see if it works. Without testing the card or the board it is hard to say. Sometimes a weak powersupply can cause problems like this. Also make sure if there is a power connection to the video card that it is hooked up. Some video cards need additional power plug hooked up.

Do you have another Graphics Card that you can try out? If so this will prove that the main system is OK. Also check out the functionality of the system with a download of SiSoft Sandra asa trial which should highlight any system issues. You may have a main system RAM issue or something else that is CPU related.

I assume that it boots OK and displays what it should? Also try letting it standing after booting for 1 hour to see if iyt still functions correctly. If it does then try something simple such as adding / deleting an icon. If this is Ok then try running SiSoft Sandra or launching an application.

If the main system is OK and as it happensd across 2 x OS it sounds like a major issue with the FX5200 and is most likely to to be memory or Graphics Processor related.

Nvidia Geforce FX5200 128mb DDR AGP 8x

Hi, since you mentioned you installed an MSI card & it worked well. I can assume you changed the bios & to boot to the AGP rather than the Integrated 3D video. This is good. Notice the message you got from Nvivia. It could not locate any compatible drivers. This can indacates 1 of 4 reasons.
1. The 5200 was not completely incerted into the AGP slot.
2. The AGP slot is dirty & needs cleaned.
3. Nvidia software was installed but previouse graphics software was not removed (un-installed) before the installation of the nvidia software.
4.The card is bad.
Suggest you download the latest driver software from Nvidia.
