To generalize this problem is not recommended.
Usually this happens on laptops with a display lighted up by a CFL lamp (some units have a two CFL lamp display).
The first recommendation is to test if the inverter is working properly. If not, just replace it.
If the inverter is ok, then the lamp on your display is damaged.
You can replace it using a lamp form a used display or replace the display. Lamps are not sold separately and the process to obtain it from a used display is complicated so we recommend to replace the display when the inverter is ok.
The part number for any on these items can be found on www.hp.com with your model number which can be found on the back of the unit.
Hope this information may be useful.

The wires between the display and the mainboard are cut or the inventerboard is bad, or the backlight is fried.

this will require you to open up the laptop, if you don't have any experience you should take it to a local professional or shop.

You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Try to check the lid closing switch, the inverter board or the fluro tube.

Why would my HP laptop screen go black?

A few reasons
1) backlight burnt out (or broken)
2) loose or broken cable AND backlight burnt out (or broken)
3) Failed GPU (probably integrated into the motherboard on that model)
4) failed motherboard (same issue above)

Check by plugging in an external monitor- if you get a signal, your LCD need a new backlight (or inverter, an easy fix under $15 USD)).

Cheapest solution is to simply replace the backlight, but you'll have to diassemble the entire laptop lid/cover AND the LCD to get to the backlight at the bottom. (this could be under $20 USD to do). Often similar sized LCD's with different part numbers will work fine in different laptops (meaning, a 14" LCD mady by samsung or LG will be compatible with almost any same 14" LCD made by either, especially if it comes WITH the inverter!)...

I had same problem with HP DV6000. I ordered a new backlight on Ebay from Hong Kong cost $10 found a video on youtube on how to do it by typing in "replacing dv6000 backlight" apart from soldering a couple of wires was pretty straight forward and took less than an hour. Shop had quoted $400 to do this and fine is now working like new again. Good luck from Scott and please dont forget to vote

Hp 1245dx backlight not working on keyboard. was

the inverter is likely disconnected, loose, or burnt out. You can purchase a replacement on ebay for your specific model. Then carefully unscrew the plastic frame around your screen until you find identical looking part. Inverter (looks like small flourescent tube) is usually connected via plug-in connectors and doesn't require soldering. Hope this helps.

HP Pavilion ze2000 Monitor is dim

Yes, this is what happens when the backlight goes out.
This will give you an idea of what is involved in replacing the backlight. You can find a replacement backlight here, or on ebay, just take your current backlight(s) out, measure it or them, and buy replacements of the same measurements. It doesn't have to be for the same model laptop as long as the CCFLs (cold cathode florescent lamp) are the same size.

Faulty backlight hp laptop

Well, first off, do you get a screen (external or onboard) if you boot into the bios? If you have no video whatsoever, the only thing that would start working again after time off, then stop, would be the video module went. slowly, but it went.

Main cause is overheating, caused by the heatsink/fan becoming clogged up.

What makes you think the backlight was the problem BTW? Sure it wasn't just the inverter?

Let me know if you can access bios?

Good luck
